Google Maps and Street View Undergo Awesome Redesign
ReadWriteWeb — Google Maps underwent a major redesign today and the new street view is pretty fantastic. Now users can take drag a little human figure named "Pegman" over any streets that light up blue and get a preview of Street View for that location. When Pegman lands, the whole map view turns into a Street View viewer and there's a button to expand that view to take up the whole horizontal length of your browser. These are very welcome changes that really help take advantage of the eye candy that is Street View in Google Maps. There's a whole lot of changes that were made today, all with the long-term fight for map users and their ad-viewing ...

Google Maps updated to emphasize Street View
VentureBeat — Google Maps underwent some user interface changes today. The controls on the right hand side now look cleaner and there is an easier way to enter Street View, Google Maps’ optional view that allows you to traverse a city in real pictures taken on the street level. In cities where Street View is available, you’ll see on the right side controls a male icon illuminated orange. This is what Google refers to as “Pegman.” Clicking on him will enter you into Street View which will take up the entire maps portion of the screen. Or, you can click and drag Pegman to any area where Street View is available to easily see the view for ...

The Next Web — Google have announced some changes to Google Maps today, particularly to enhance Street View. In places where street view is available, you are able to just click the small yellow man (Google are calling him Pegman) to see the street view for the current location or you can simply drag the icon to the location on the map, a nice touch. Google have also revamped the layout of Street View to give you the ability to view larger and wider buildings/objects. Finally, Google have also added a feature allowing you to see both the Map and Street View a the same time (see right). With all the talk of job losses and troubled ...

Google Maps Gets Its Own Version of Clippy (And Some Useful Street View Updates)
Mashable! — Google Maps has just launched a number of updates that make Street View much more prominent. Now, whenever you’re viewing a map where there is Street View imagery available, you’ll be able to drag “Pegman” from the view slider to the street where you’d like to see a picture. When you’re using Pegman to navigate Street View, you also now get a smaller version of the original map in the lower right corner, allowing you to navigate all from the same screen. While these are great updates on the whole, I can’t help but be reminded of Clippy, the now-defunct Microsoft Office assistant, when watching the video demo that the Google ...

The Inquisitr » Technology — Google has released a major overhaul for Google Street View, delivering new functionality that makes the service easier and more friendly to use. The new Street View revolves around “Pegman” a Clippy like character that users can drag and drop anywhere to view Street View. Better still, users can hold Pegman over a location for a second to see a preview of what the Street View image looks like before deciding on the full shot. Street View also goes big screen with an inset map, allowing for better viewing of images, and quicker switching, per the screenshot above. Directions are now offered in ...

Google Maps Redesign Puts ‘Street View’ Front and Center
Webmonkey — Google has revamped its popular Maps tool with a new interface that puts the emphasis on its Street View tool. A new set of controls — looking very much like those you’ll find in Google Earth — highlights a new “Pegman” icon at the top of the zoom controls. Whenever Street View is available the pegman icon will turn orange. Dragging the icon onto the map then triggers the familiar blue lines of Street View and dropping the pegman icon onto the map will cause Street View to fill the map window. Once Street View takes over, you can navigate using the Street View arrows or via a small thumbnail map that resides ...

Google Makes Street View More Prominent in Maps
SitePoint — Since launching in May of 2007, Google Street View has since expanded coverage to enough cities across the world that Google now feels comfortable integrating it more deeply with their Maps product. This week, they announced a number of enhancements to the Street View feature that bring it to the forefront of the map experience and make it more tightly integrated with the other features of Maps. The biggest change is in the way you now access Street View. Gone is the toggle button in the upper right hand corner of the map. Instead, Street View can be initiated by dragging the “Pegman” icon from the zoom tool in the upper left corner of a ...

The 3D Web in 2008
ReadWriteWeb — What's going on with the 3D web? At one point, it was being heralded as the next big thing. Is that still the case? Take for example, the virtual world Second Life. Once a booming place where every business had set up their online presence, the formerly happening hotspot is now gloomy and dead. As one-time Second Life reporter Eric Krangel said, hanging out in Second Life is "about as fun as watching paint dry." Sponsor But Second Life isn't the end-all be-all of the 3D web and its slowdown does not necessarily mean that the 3D web itself is dead. Second Life is gasping for air - at least in terms ...
