'I'm Just Not Cool Enough to Be a Mac Person'
Microsoft Watch —
March 26, 2009 6:39 PM 'I'm Just Not Cool Enough to Be a Mac Person' Oh, baby, this is exactly the kind of marketing Microsoft should be doing now. The emphasis is value, with Apple taking blows from Microsoft. Ouch. arrow.gif GOT A TIP OR RUMOR? I'm finally starting to like the "I'm a PC" marketing campaign. As I asserted last week, Windows PC sales are way up at U.S. retail and Mac sales way down largely because of Microsoft marketing . Secondary reason: Pricing. The commercial jabs Apple two ways: As effective marketing and by focusing on value. The value emphasis is kind of counter-intuitive marketing. Microsoft's business is selling operating ...
“Not cool enough for a Mac”
Mobility Site —
Looking at the newest commercial to come out of Redmond, following up on the recent kid based “rookie” ads, it appears that Microsoft may finally be finding the gaps in Apple’s armor.
The new ad features a cute, likable, easy-to-relate-to woman named Lauren hunting for a laptop that can do what she needs it to for under 1000 bucks. She looks for a Mac, but concedes that she just doesn’t think she is “cool” enough for a Mac, and doesn’t want to pay twice her budget for a 13 inch machine. She doesn’t dis the machine, just the price and “elite” nature of the marketing. She finally finds the machine for her in a sea of options at Best Buy, running Windows of course. ...
Microsoft strikes back at Apple in new ad campaign
TG Daily - All News —
Redmond (WA) - Microsoft is digging their heels into Apple's back in a new advertising campaign. The software giant takes the stance that Apple just can't continue to price gouge consumers in the much injured economy. The new ad follows Steve Ballmer's comments last week which support the idea: "Apple gained about one point, but now I think the tide has really turned back the other direction." Ballmer added, "The economy is helpful. Paying an extra $500 for a computer in this environment -- same piece of hardware -- paying $500 more to get a logo on it? I think that's a more challenging proposition for the average person than it used to be." The ad war has been ongoing ...

Microsoft makes an ad for those people who were going to buy a PC anyway
VentureBeat —
By now, you’ve probably seen Microsoft’s new “Not cool enough to be a Mac person” ad. (If not, I’ve embedded it below.) On the face of it, it looks like a decent ad. It plays the one thing that will catch people’s attention in a down economy: price. But if you stop to think about it, the ad is kind of pointless, because it’s targeting people who were going to get a PC anyway.
You see, Lauren, the girl in the ad, wants a laptop with a 17-inch screen for under $1,000. Apple simply does not make that product. And perhaps more importantly to the relevance of this ad, Apple has no intention of making such a product because it ...
Microsoft's newest ad gambit: Macs are too expensive

Alice Hill's Real Tech News - Independent Tech — laptophunters1.jpg By Michael Santo Editor-in-Chief, RealTechNews Microsoft has made quite an issue of the “Apple Tax,” the premium that Apple buyers pay, and that Microsoft’s Steve Ballmer says “ buys you a logo .” On Thursday, Microsoft unveiled their latest series of ads, called “Laptop Hunters,” which will follow real people as they hunt for a new laptop. In the first ad, they introduce us to a woman we know only as “Lauren” who has set a limit herself on her laptop purchase of $1,000. Microsoft gives her $1,000 and tells her she can keep anything left after the purchase. Her desired specs: a laptop that has “speed,” a comfortable keyboard and a ...

But a quick trip to her myspace page has us wondering if there’s anything else she’s denying? Microsoft's Lauren: She Bought The Fourth-Best Computer
Byte of the Apple - BusinessWeek —

Her assignment, for the add is to get a notebook with a 17-inch screen for less than $1,000, and if she can find it, she can keep it. First the ad for those who didn't see it.
"Just what I wanted" appears to be an HP Pavilion, specifically this one found on sale, as it is listed with a starting price of $800, not $699 as shown in the ad. She bought it after visiting a Mac store and finding that the 17-inch MacBook Pro starts at $2,799. At that ...

While the first ad featured Lauren, our now favorite red-headed Microsoft spokeperson (and actress), this one features Giampaolo, who’s looking for more than Lauren was: portability, battery life, and power, for under $1,500. Some of the highlights: To start, he emphasizes he’s tech-savvy: I’m going to buy a laptop. I’m technically savvy, I know what I want. I want a computer that allows me to customize. Microsoft Ads Aims at Apple Where it Hurts: Value For The Price
Ubergizmo —
Microsoft is coming out with a couple of video ads that kick Apple where it hurts: the stalk the value. Basically the ad says that users who want a computer that bulkier and more powerful should look at PCs because they provide a better value for the price, especially if one is looking at the 17" laptops. A Dell Inspiron with an (almost) similar configuration to the 17" Macbook Pro ($2700) goes for $1300. This means that there is a gap in Apple's offering that (big) PC laptops cover very well. Anyhow, it's just an ad, so take a look. What do you think?

Jim Goldman, CNBC Silicon Bureau Chief, is apparently a Byte of the Apple reader. But as you watch his remarks in the video below, wherein he cites what are clearly figures borrowed from my column last week, he makes an important mistake: He portrays these figures as applying broadly to Windows PCs, not specifically to the HP model in the Lauren spot when compared to the 17-inch MacBook Pro. Microsoft opened its second retail location, this one in Mission Viejo, Calif., on Oct. 29. Microsoft executives have stated that they intend to compete aggressively against Apple in the retail arena, with plans to open some of their outlets in close proximity to those of their hip Cupertino rival. The Shops at Mission Viejo will be the first true test of that theory, as the mall also contains an Apple Store.
