Microsoft Turns to Social Media to Promote Internet Explorer 8
Mashable! —
Microsoft has released the latest version of its Web browser, Internet Explorer 8. While the features include improved security and supposedly faster performance, we’re more interested in how the company is promoting IE8 through social media.
Once again, Microsoft is turning to what they hope will be viral video. The company somewhat infamously tried this last year with a multi-million dollar campaign featuring Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld, but this time around, is going a bit more grassroots, with a series of YouTube videos featuring the likes of Ask a Ninja and Obama Girl, as well as some B-list Hollywood ...
Microsoft Launches IE8 With History Of Internet Vid
TechDarling —
I haven't used Internet Explorer in oh, about 4 years, and I probably won't again (ever) but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy this (potentially) viral video they released celebrating the launch of Internet Explorer 8.
This LOL-worthy video campaign features cameos from B-list comedians as well as clips from classic viral vids and websites (hello, Chawlee Bit Me & the Hamster Dance!) Microsoft is also relying on the influential power of social media to help promote IE8, and have even ...
A Microsoft advertisement that's actually funny? You decide.
The Microsoft Blog —
Microsoft's Internet Explorer 8 launched yesterday, and to accompany the new browser, the company has released the following commercial. The video mocks the history of the Internet. Advertising agency Bradley and Montgomery did the video, which premiered Thursday at MIX09, Microsoft's Web developer conference in Las Vegas. What's the point? Microsoft wants the world to know that it was there first. "Almost everything you've experienced on the World Wide Web in the past 15 years or so has been seen through Microsoft's Internet Explorer," says Ben Carlson, Chief Strategy Officer of Bradley and Montgomery. The video features Janeane Garofalo, ...
Janeane Garofalo Now Pitching For Microsoft, And She's Funny (Video)
Silicon Alley Insider —
Microsoft (MSFT) debuted the new version of its Internet Explorer browser yesterday, and ad agency Bradley and Montgomery put together a five-minute "history of the Internet" video to help promote the new tech.
The vid stars a series of comedians including brief appearances by Janeane Garofalo, whio recall some old Internet memes like "Ask a Ninja" and the Hamster dance, and poke gentle fun at things like inane Facebook status updates.
It's more amusing than funny, but we have to say we like it better than the Microsoft ads by that other 90s comedy icon, Jerry Seinfeld. ...

You know, I have to give props to Microsoft’s ad agency Bradley and Montgomery for a hilarious new ad promoting IE8. It’s full of celebrities poking fun at the Internet with intermittent sprinklings of IE8 that don’t overwhelm and bore you like other MS ads. Kudos all around. Happy YouTube Friday!

Shocking! Microsoft gets a sense of humor
Preston Gralla's blog —
To help launch Internet Explorer 8, Microsoft has created a kind of mockumentary about the history of the Internet. Surprise! It's actually funny. The video features a series of interviews with comedians including Janeane Garofalo, Christian Finnegan, and Dave Hill, and is tongue-in-cheek, ironic, off-color and clever...all the things that Microsoft is normally not. You can see the video, from YouTube, below. The video manages to hit some of the Internet's low-lights, including the maddening hamster dance of years gone by. There's no hard sell here for Internet Explorer 8. The video goes on for too long, but despite that, manages to be ...

Microsoft’s “History Of The Internet” Video Is Funnier Than Seinfeld
Pulse2 - Technology News And Reviews —
Jeffrey Rayport (Harvard Prof), Beth Dover (comedian), Ask A Ninja, Janeane Garofalo (comedian), Dave Hill, Christian Finnegan (comedian), Jordan Carlos (comedian), Baron Vaughn (comedian), and the Hamster Dance all star in this marketing video put together by Microsoft’s ad agency Bradley and Montgomery. Its a 5 minute video about the “history of the Internet.” The video was made in promotion of Internet Explorer 8.
I’d say that this video is funnier than the set of clips Microsoft put together using Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Gates. This video brought back memories of The Hamster Dance and Ask A Ninja, two ...

Internet Explorer 8 is heading to PCs soon. Microsoft made a 5 minute "History of the Internet" video to commemorate this "event". The video isn't too bad, but it didn't include the part where Microsoft bought the Spyglass browser fron U. of Illinois and killed off Netscape by abusing its monopoly power. Strange

To Honor Internet Explorer: The Internet Remembered
GeekSugar —
To celebrate the advent of Internet Explorer 8, Microsoft made this semi-tongue-in-cheek video about the Internet's beginnings and evolution. It's kind of a dry, documentary-style spot starring comedians like Janeane Garofalo and Ask a Ninja, but it still managed to make me chuckle. ...
Internet Explorer viral video taps Microsoft's funny bone
