YouTube Tests HD Videos
ReadWriteWeb —
According to a report by Wired's Meghan Keane, YouTube is testing stereo sound as a default option for videos and is also offering very high quality HD versions of a small selection of clips. We weren't able to find a lot of videos that were encoded in the 720p HD format, but it is important to note that this is different from the 'watch in high quality' option YouTube already offers, which only features a resolution of 480x360 and which doesn't look half as good as the 720p option.
It would not surprise us if Google was adding these options to give ...

Webware.com —
... Wired, with the help of users on the VR-Zone forums has uncovered a simple way to get high quality uploaded videos to display in 1280x720--also known as 720p. The hack in question is similar to the one that was first used to toggle on the "high quality" mode, and is done by adding "&fmt;=22" to the end of the video URL.

... YouTube to Keep a Name For Itself? I have not seen any official announcements yet, but YouTube looks to be venturing into High-Definition territory, a place where its competitors are already residing. Meghan Keane at Wired writes : The new format seems like real HD 720p video and looks clean and professional in the widescreen format. As we've noted in our Watch Higher Quality YouTube Videos wiki, it is possible to make YouTube's high quality video the default on the site, but formerly it was only possible to watch at a 480x360 resolution. Chances are it won’t make a bit of different to most users, but to those who will care, it is a huge step forward. YouTube is finally becoming the video hub for everyone, and not just those who can deal with bad video and audio quality.

It might be a while before all YouTube videos look this good, a factor not only of YouTube's server bandwidth, but also of viewers' download speeds, as well as the HD production capabilities of most video submitters. YouTube, purveyor of some of worst looking flash video is finally getting their act together. We posted the other day about embedding videos using &fmt=18 to get higher quality YouTube videos. It seems the awesome knob has now been turned up to &fmt=22. All of the previous tricks should work, just use 22 instead of 18. This all depends on the highdef version being available.
