Is Google Trying to Destroy YouTube?
RotorBlog.com —
... the things that made YouTube such a big hit was the fact that it enables users to upload their originally recorded video, be it coming from their videocamera or a slideshow of photos created using Windows Movie Maker. Using Windows Movie Maker, users can easily add MP3 sound to their video to serve as a background music. Unfortunately it looks like YouTube users who are fond of sharing these videos to their friends using YouTube will not longer be able to do it. YouTube is starting to mute videos with copyrighted audios. ...

YouTube Mutes (Some) Copyrighted Music
WebProNews Feed —
... lower on the pages, though, and you'll be able to read outraged comments from any number of users. Some rail against the RIAA; some criticize YouTube. Others go straight to suggesting possible solutions, and these include visiting other video-sharing sites or turning to things like Limewire and the Pirate Bay. Still, it appears that YouTube hasn't gone all-out with this answer to the copyright problem, since it's far easier to find videos that haven't been muted than ones that have. Stan Schroeder provided a link to " ...

Google quietly deals with YouTube audio copyright violations

... without the actual song, now's your chance to find out. Or you can check out an alternate version of the video, also sans music. Fortunately there's still music accompanying Rick Astley's dance moves. The decision to remove just the music from the unofficially uploaded videos makes sense in the case of fan made movies. But for music videos, it seems like an odd move, since the music studios own the rights to the video and not just the music. Warner Music Group Mutes YouTube
Wired: Epicenter —
Major label Warner Music Group made big waves with its proclamation that it wasn't being paid enough for its music being played on YouTube, and its attendant demand that Google remove all of its music from the site.
As Mashable mentioned, YouTube is now muting the audio tracks on some of those tracks, leaving the video online.
However, as it did not mention, all four of its examples -- Albert King, Seal, John Michael Montgomery and Jason Mraz -- are on the Warner Music Group label. The muting appears to be part of ...
YouTube removing audio from clips using copyrighted sources
Obsessable News Feed —
... So, you've just finished your latest video mash-up, mixing clips of Jill Solblue's 1995 I Kissed a Girl with the music from the Katy Perry song of the same name. Clever, no? Except a day after uploading to YouTube, you're not getting the number of views you expected. Checking in on your clip, there's no longer any audio - there goes the whole point of your project! You might just have fallen victim to YouTube's latest weapon in the war against all things piracy. ...

... kind of notice that your video has been muted.
It’s also unclear to me whether any use of a copyrighted song is muted, or just those uses that violate the notoriously hard-to-define “fair use”. The YouTube Copyright Tips page says only “Unfortunately we cannot make a determination whether your video qualifies as fair use.” You can’t blame them for erring on the side of caution, but it’s still kind of a bummer.

YouTube Videos Being Muted
Google Blogoscoped —
Mashable reports that some YouTube videos are now being muted due to copyright concerns. Stan Schroeder writes:
<<If YouTube starts being thorough about this, you can expect to see a significant percentage of all YouTube videos muted. The implications are a bit different than with removing copyrighted professionally produced content, like an official music video; we’re talking about tens of thousands of fan made videos, funny spoofs, remixes and the like being pretty much destroyed, and I’m guessing users will be less than ...
