How to turn an Eee PC into a carputer
Liliputing — In what can only be described as one of the coolest netbook hacks to date, one Russian Eee PC 701 owner decided that his netbook would look better in his car’s dashboard than on his lap. So he set about to make it happen. The end result? An Eee PC-based carputer with GPS, Bluetooth, and a wireless keyboard that hangs out in the glove compartement. Based on the photos, it looks like this particular machine runs Windows XP, functions as a media player, and presumably a GPS device. It also looks like the kind of hack that requires a bit more than a few soldered wires. For one thing, there’s not much ventilation behind the dashboard, so this hack ...

Asus Eee PC Turned To Carputer
Ubergizmo — The Asus Eee PC might have just turned one recently, but plenty has changed in the space of 12 months. The extremely dated Eee PC 701 could be better used in this cool mod that functions in your car, helping provide the driver with GPS navigation capability and Bluetooth connectivity, all controlled via a wireless keyboard which is located in the glove compartment. This hack will most probably be powered by Windows XP and also features multimedia playback capability to keep the kids entertained during those long road trips. Since the dashboard has basically zero ventilation to speak of, it is not wrong to assume that heat sinks will be featured heavily. Add a ...

By the looks of things, making this hack work in your vehicle will be no easy task—and there isn't much to go on besides a series of photos that outline the build process. Still, if you are willing to give it a try, the images are available in the link. [Photofile and eee.pc.ru via Liliputing] ...

Russian Eee PC In-Dash Computer Mod
Wired: Gadget Lab — An enterprising Russian hacker has ripped apart both his car's dashboard and his Eee PC (701G) and recombined them into a rather excellent in-car computer. It's no simple mod, either: The perpetrator, named Dali, added a USB touchscreen, USB Bluetooth, a USB GPS unit (plus, of course, a USB hub), and a wireless keyboard and joystick mouse. The result is a location-aware entertainment system running what looks like a skinned version of Windows XP -- enough to distract even the most focussed driver. While the result is undoubtedly very professional looking (the fit and finish makes this look like a factory-added option), it wasn't easy. Take a look at the step by step photo gallery to see ...
