... . And all for what? Turns out (not surprisingly) the DRM didn't do squat to stop unauthorized file sharing. Spore has now been declared the most downloaded video game of the year. And, even though the year's not over, no other game is going to catch up. And, it's worth noting, the game only launched in October, so this is only over a couple of months. In other words, EA's "antipiracy strategy" backfired almost completely. The company got a huge PR blackeye which probably only encouraged more people to download the game via file sharing. EA's Spore topped the list of most pirated video games for 2008, according to TorrentFreak.
Spore suffered from a serious PR problem when Electronic Arts introduced an archaic DRM technology that infuriated thousands of users and led to a piracy tsunami. EA, however, said the downloads didn't hurt Spore sales.

... Largely thanks to the draconian DRM bundled with Will Wright's 'Spore', the life-simulation game has been downloaded an epic 1.7 million times since its release at the start of September. If my maths is right, that means that one copy is downloaded every five seconds or so. If that rate had been maintained over the whole year, then people would have snagged 6.5 million copies. We, as rational customers have likely come to understand that if a company is willing to treat us all like pirates by enforcing strict DRM upon us, we’ll become pirates.
