TiVo increasing on-screen ads, cable companies rejoice
Boy Genius Report —
Sometimes you just have to sit back and wonder what TiVo is thinking. Apparently the biz dev team there doesn’t think the unending onslaught of television commercials is enough to drive the average television watcher completely insane, so it seems to be doing everything it can to place ads over every last square inch of the TiVo UI. TiVo users may have thought that every possible screen was already laced with advertising banners but it looks like there’s at least one spot that hasn’t been covered yet - the pause screen. That’s right folks, ...
Ads coming soon to a paused TiVo menu near you
Engadget —
... now offer ad space on its pause menu. Designed to outsmart those who fast-forward through the ads (we assume that's almost everyone at this point, right?) buyers will be able to target viewers of a specific show, or they can opt to "cast a wider net" and advertise within genres or keywords of program descriptions. Even if this means we'll be seeing ads for Shrute Farms beets during The Office, we're still going to hold out hope for the TiVo version of Adblock. [Via Zatz Not Funny] ...

... for advertisers seeking to capture the fast-forwarding viewer. Its another example of how TiVo offers unique and different solutions for advertisers looking to get viewers to watch advertisement." The pause ads are only on Series2 TiVo systems after the 9.3.2 update. It is safe to assume that Series3 and TiVoHD DVRs will also get the pause and treatment. It provides a richer, more interactive experience featuring video suggestions based on “community” popularity and subscriber’s personalized Thumbs Up/Down show ratings. Unfortunately, it’s probably inevitable that we’ll also see some sponsored placements. ...
Moxi Site Redesign: All About TiVo
Zatz Not Funny! —
... Regarding the advertising, for many of us, one of TiVo’s initial value props was the ability to bypass commercials. Yet, we’re now confronted by ads all over the UI. However, Digeo’s ad-free sales pitch rings a bit hollow… as they’ve hedged their bets with this fine print found in the footer of every page: “Certain current and/or future features/services provided by third parties may contain advertising.” And even the fee-less nature of the Moxi HD DVR may be finite: “Certain future services may be offered at ...

... Regular readers know I can get a little cranky when it comes to TiVo’s advertising initiatives. So my quotes showing up in various AP-syndicated papers should come as no surprise. Unfortunately for TiVo, the reporter called the week I was bombarded with pause menu mascara ad after pause menu mascara ad. Targeted advertising? Really?
Dave Zatz, a 37-year-old network engineer in Herndon, Va., isn’t happy about it because he bought a TiVo digital video recorder and pays a subscription to skip ads. “It’s ...
