Gift cards for MAKE gift subscriptions
MAKE Magazine — When I was a kid my grandmother gave me a subscription to World magazine, it was a kids version of National Geographic - I grew up in the middle of nowhere and we also didn't have TV - each month I'd wait outside on the dirt road for the postal delivery of the magazine. It was magical, photos from far away places, simple how-tos of things I could make, puzzles, games - it was one of the best things I remember growing up. It's safe to say I wouldn't be working on MAKE if it wasn't for that modest gift all those years. When parents and grandparents talk to us at Maker Faire or send us emails we hear similar stories - they got ...

LED MAKE Gift Subscription Card
MAKE Magazine — Thinking of giving a subscription to MAKE this holiday season? We've made some print-at-home cards suitable for giving and mailing. Consider dressing up your card a bit with some LEDs! I used conductive thread and a watch battery to power the holiday lights on the front of our "Tinker, Tinker, Little Star" card. See how I did it at my Flickr set. Read more | Permalink | Comments | Read more articles in Holiday projects | Digg this!

Give MAKE/CRAFT to a school
MAKE Magazine — ... Last year I gave MAKE and CRAFT gift subscriptions to my son's school - I was in the school library the other day and saw the latest editions on the magazine rack, looking well-thumbed already! The librarian often sends me emails telling me about kids and teachers discovering the magazines in the library and getting really excited, and I know several teachers are starting to use them in their curriculum development. It makes me remember the first time I saw Make on the newsstand and how thrilled I was to find it existed - I love that I can pass that excitement and ...

Still life with MAKE gift card
MAKE Magazine — ... for the Maker Shed? Better yet, how about a customized version of the gift card or gift certificate? I took one of the gift cards and the DIY Design Electronics Kit and made a sort of still life--the 556 timer fit perfectly into the IC drawn on the gift card. I got to thinking it might be fun to actually hook all this stuff up so that it works, as you can see below. I think I'm going to need some smaller clips if this is to be freestanding! HOW TO - LED gift subscription card
MAKE Magazine — I was giving a subscription to MAKE this year to a friend for Christmas, so I printed out one of the print-at-home gift cards to announce it. Here's my Flickr set showing how you can add LEDs to a card using conductive thread and a watch battery with holder. It's pretty easy and uses the same circuit as my electronic embroidery tutorial. The LEDs are wired in parallel with each other and the battery is on the back of the card. The threads run between the two folded layers of paper so as to be held secure. My MAKE Holiday Card - Most Annoying Ever?
MAKE Magazine — Give the gift of MAKE this year, and spruce up your gift card while you're at it! For example: Here's a noise-making card/circuit that I built using a 555 timer IC and some other junk parts I had around the house. The robot "talks" by squeezing the leads of one of the capacitors that make his body. Mr. Frauenfelder's head controls the pitch of the squeeling, the on/off of this sound is "controlled" simply by keeping the potentiometer just ever so lightly plugged in to the breadboard underneath the card so that the sound stops when it gets disconnected, allowing the robot to talk. Also, the trunk of the tree is chocolate. ...
