Mozilla Europe President Tristan Nitot has told TechRadar that he believes the launch of the iPhone and Android has helped the company open up the mobile phone industry. Google Squared has been released into Labs, meaning users can now have a play with the fact-collection concept in beta form. Users will now be able to search for a topic and see the information organised in a spreadsheet, with relevant information added to each column. For instance, if you're looking to find out about your favourite football team, just type in the name, and it will give you a squad list, with information like position, weight and previous clubs. Sony Ericsson is the latest mobile phone manufacturer to jump on the app store bandwagon, with its announcement that it is to offer applications through its PlayNow Arena. Unveiled at the JavaOne Software Developers' Conference in San Francisco, the app store has been set up in conjunction with independent app store GetJar. This link-up that will bring 45,000 new free applications to SE customers, which will be available alongside the premium movies, games and music downloads now available. The store won't be limited to just Sony Ericsson handsets, however, as it will cater to all Javascript capable devices. Vodafone is marking the launch of DRM-free music tracks by offering eight free downloads to all customers for one day only. Dubbed Free Music Friday (whew, bet Vodafone's glad it wasn't a Wednesday, that would have sounded awful) users will be able to get tracks from the likes of Lady GaGa, Tinchy Strider and Lily Allen, although the 'free eight' has been chosen for you already, so if you're not aged between 11-18 or 'down wit da yoot', they might not all be to your taste. The already much-fabled date of 24 June, when HTC will be announcing 'something', is looking even more fabled as rumours leak that we'll be seeing both QWERTY-enabled and touchscreen-only Android phones.
