The PSP 2 Will Ditch UMD, According to Developer [Unconfirmed]
Gizmodo —
According to a developer from Acclaim, the still unannounced PSP 2 will be ditching the UMD format. From his Twitter and Facebook accounts: I hear Sony FINALLY has the PSP 2. And thank goodness, they've removed the stupid battery-sucking UMD disc drive. I'm excited! No UMD wouldn't just mean better battery life. Its absence could allow for thinner form factors as well. Thinner sliding form factors, perhaps? [Kotaku]

PSP 2 rumors picking up steam

... Dave Perry surrounding the PSP 2.

Of course, this could just be a load of poppy cock, but we can never be too sure. If it’s true that Sony ditched UMD on the next gen PSP then the question is whether or not it will be backwards compatible. We probably won’t know until E3 in June.

Availability of PSP 2 sans UMD disc drive rumored
Gizmo Watch —
... from developer David Perry’s message on Facebook and Twitter, Sony could finally have the PSP 2 sans the high battery-consuming UMD disc drive made available by this fall. Wonder if the new gaming device would be backward compatible i.e. allowing input from the older version, or would it require downloads through the PlayStation Network store, but the introduction of Flash memory storage instead of the optical drive sure seems a logical pick for a PSP of the next gen.

Sony Gaming Rumor Roundup: Price Drops, New Hardware and More
Fast Company - Technology —
... . Rumors have been circulating that a new version is due and it'll do away with the (always slightly bizarre) UMD drive and feature downloadable games content. This would be a welcome move, in part because it could allow the portable's price to be lowered significantly. If also combined with a processor/hardware speed uptick it could move the PSP into market-leading "PSP2" status that could be as revolutionary as the PS2 was when it first launched. ...
