Sadly, even after my continued claims that optical media is dead, there still isn't a real non-CD alternative for audiophiles. Maybe one day, as internet connections get faster, we'll be able to download uncompressed WAV files, but until then we're stuck with convenient but inferior MP3s, or DIY CD ripping into lossless formats.

Currys, the country's largest electrical goods chain, says that sales have increased by 50 per cent compared to last year and industry figures from market research firm GfK show that 45,000 portable CD players were sold in October alone.

... where people ask for MP3 players that are easy to use for people with little technical knowledge such as parents and grandparents. It's hard to recommend something that's "easy to use" for people that haven't or have barely touched a computer. It's very interesting to see that this results in an "old" technology coming back to life. Maybe if SanDisk is successful with their SlotMusic system we'll see move to memory card based music listening for the older generation.
