However, there will still be a need for long-term archival storage. Perhaps that's where Pioneer's projected 1TB optical drive will be welcomed in 2013. Unless, of course, someone figures out a better way to store data for centuries by then. Five years is a long time — there could be a whole new way to store data by then.

We don’t know, given the changing trends in the storage devices, how long the optical discs will survive, but there is a possibility that Pioneer sees a bright future in the market, and that’s why the maker’s wish to built better and more powerful 1TB discs by 2013. The optical discs will be available only in ready read-only format until 2010, where after, rewritable discs shall also be available.
