Panasonic to launch first fully paperless fax machine

... I'm actually quite surprised that it's taken the human race this long to develop a machine that sends faxes without actually having to feed in paper. To send, you can type messages mobile-phone-keypad-style on the big built-in buttons, or alternatively you can send Word docs, as well as docs saved in 'other formats'. Presumably PDF will be among them. Fax messages can be read on the device's screen and, sadly, printed out if you absolutely have to. ... death.
You can send faxes using the built-in keypad to type out your messages, or you can send saved Word documents through. It's a great idea on the surface, but not having even the option of using paper might not be that great. After all, what if you need to send a signed document? Or something you don't have on your computer? Let's just hope the entire fax machine thing just dies off entirely so we won't have to worry about such things anymore.

... ask yourself why paperless information can’t be sent with e-mail, especially when a Word document can be sent as an attachment. That way, changes can be made if needed, rather than a one-time only digital copy of something that is about as useful as a text message.
Still, it is a step in the right direction for a technological society that needs to use less paper. Who knows if this paperless fax will catch on, but it is due to be released in Japan on January 23rd.
