Opera Turbo for Desktop now available for download
Tech Ticker —
Opera has released a testing copy of its server side optimized Turbo enabled Opera browser. The browser, as we all know, works pretty much like Opera Mini which sends the requested website to Opera servers for optimization and brings back the compressed version of the website. I am currently trying it out and the Turbo feature does work but as Opera points out, it is not effective on a fast connection.

Opera tests server-side optimization technology

... for those who would like to take the technology for a spin. When turned on, Opera Turbo will display the average compression rate along with the amount of bandwidth saved at the bottom of the screen. The company warns that, as a result of compression, images on a ...

Turbo uses “Opera Web Optimization Proxy” technology, web sites layout and text will look exactly the same, but image resolution may appear considerably lower as a result of the compression. Opera offers Turbo to speed up slow Web browsing

Opera begins beta testing the next version of its Windows Web browser (Opera 10): At Opera, we love speed. We work hard to make our browser faster with features that speeds you up, but your connection also plays a big role on how fast you can go. Some people have fast connections, a lot have slow connections. Many are always on the run from one place to another — making it hard to find regular fast connection points. Even if you do, it might be that too many people are on the Wi-Fi in the cafe or that you are browsing through ...
Opera 10 Turbo Gives Slow Connections a Kick in the Pants [TheAppleBlog]

... Software innovations are often over-hyped, so I approached the Opera Turbo Labs preview version of the Opera 10 browser with — how shall I say? — hopeful skepticism. As one who has suffered (not too strong a word) with a slow rural dial up Internet connection for the past 12 years, I’m eager to embrace any technology that promises to help speed things up. ...

... Meanwhile, Opera has released an alpha test version of its browser, dubbed Opera Turbo, downloadable at the bottom of this page. I loaded this and used it quite a bit yesterday, and it is surprisingly fast, and especially good for slower performing machines. I could see many netbook owners appreciating it. It mixes up the way pages are rendered, so that you see text before grahics load and the like. It had some problems with certain sites I went to, but was generally very fast. ...

Coming soon: Opera Mobile 9.7
Betanews —
... Opera Turbo compresses and accelerates full Web pages for improved browsing over limited-bandwidth connections. The technology opened in limited public testing just under two weeks ago , and can be applied to Opera's native browser products. Because Turbo uses a technology called "Opera Web Optimization Proxy," which is different from the Opera Binary Markup Language used in Opera Mini, the acceleration technology will not available on Mini, which now has a userbase of 20.5 million. Opera says that Mobile 9.7 with Opera Turbo compresses data as much as 80%, and offloads page ...
