OSNews ) that Opera Mini, one of the company's mobile web browsers for smartphones, has already been ported to the iPhone but can't be released as Apple's rules for the App Store preclude software that replicate the core functionality of the iPhone or iPod touch. No Opera on the iPhone? Not Good
Technologizer —
The New York Times’ Saul Hansell has published a piece on browser company Opera , and the biggest news it contains is a passing reference halfway through the story: Opera CEO Jon von Tetzchner says that the company has developed a version of Opera for the iPhone, but Apple has refused to distribute it on the ground that it competes with its own Safari. It’s the latest of multiple examples of Apple nixing competitive apps that’s come to light. Daring Fireball’s John Gruber has pointed out that this instance may be different from others: ...

Apple BANS Opera from the iPhone
Tech Digest —
... with Apple's own Safari browser, the iPhone makers won't let it onto their platform. It's a damn shame, because although the iPhone browsing experience is acceptable (unlike a lot of phones), it's not perfect, and Opera has a track record of significantly improving the mobile experience on almost every platform it's available on. The iPhone might be a great device, but its closed nature and uber-controlled user experience has its downsides, and this is one of them. It seems that the engineers at Opera developed a version of Opera Mini that would run on the iPhone (and the iPod touch), but this browser will never see light of day because Apple rejected it from the App Store . Mr. von Tetzchner said that Opera’s engineers have developed a version of Opera Mini that can run on an Apple iPhone, but Apple won’t let the company release it because it competes with Apple’s own Safari browser. This could be something to do with the Javascript interpreter, or Apple restricting applications which compete with their built in iPhone applications such as Safari. With Apple restricting apps, especially alternative browsers, iPhoner will probably not be seeing an alternative such as FireFox anywhere on the Apple App Store very soon.

Opera: Apple says no to competing browsers on iPhone
Obsessable News Feed —
... Browser developer Opera revealed that it has an iPhone version of its Opera Mini software ready to go, but Apple won't have any of it. Opera Mini doesn't connect to web sites directly, but uses a remote server to access the page and compress it before sending it to a mobile device, saving bandwidth and speeding page rendering times. Apple gets last say on which apps it will and won't sell in the iPhone apps store, and apparently won't be permitting software that competes with built-in iPhone programs. That seems a bit insecure of Apple, as it wouldn't be losing any browser sales ...
Opera for iPhone Ready To Go, If Not For Apple's App Store Policies [IPhone Apps]
Gizmodo —
... to Opera CEO Jon Stephenson von Tetzchner, an iPhone version of its popular mobile browser is developed and ready to go, but will likely never see the light of day due to Apple's infamous App Store policies, barring apps that compete with the phone's default features—here, Mobile Safari. Personally I find Safari to be pretty solid, but for those who find it crashy, an alternative would come in handy, and of course, competition is usually a good thing in situations like this. Sigh. Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has blocked Opera Software ASA (OSL:OPERA) from releasing their own browser software into the App Store. The Opera browser is already supported by Windows Mobile and many people use it as their default rather than Internet Explorer. Daring Fireball —
I’ve done some digging on this “Opera Mini was rejected from the App Store” story, and the truth appears to be very different than what has been reported and assumed.

Mr. von Tetzchner said that Opera’s engineers have developed a
version of Opera Mini that can run on an Apple iPhone, but Apple
