Green ‘robot icon’ – Gmail chat status for Andriod phone
D' Technology Weblog — ... Google released a new Gmail Labs feature that show you a "robot icon" next to people who’re currently using Android phones in Gmail chat mode. In the pic, Shirley is online with Android, Nicolle R. is using regular Gmail chat, and Chris I. is currently away but also on Android. Google Android Chat Icons — Helpful Tool or Privacy Breaker? [jkOnTheRun]
GigaOM Network — Yesterday, Google introduced a Gmail Labs feature that tells you if your friends are online using an Android device. I can definitely see some benefit to this — before even sending an instant message to someone, you gain a little context of that person’s mobility. And that can help dictate the message scope you send. If I know that someone is on their handset, for example, I try to keep my IM conversations shorter and I also give them more time to respond. I’ve found that if I don’t make that adjustment, the chat conversation gets laggy and both parties are typing over each other because we’re “out of sync.” The obvious flipside here is one of privacy. I don’t think it’s ...

New GMail Icons Let you Know Which Friends Use Android
IntoMobile - Cell Phone News, Information, and Analysis — ... new one fresh from the labs is Android icons that let you know if your contact is currently online thanks to an Android device, complete with yellow Away robots, and red Busy ones. This would be a great option even if it were just extra eye candy for the Android-obsessed, but knowing someone is mobile definitely helps contextualize the conversation, and potentially avoids anyone getting offended at short, terse replies. You can enable the option in GMail over here. [via Official GMail Blog] Related News from IntoMobile: GMail ...
