Laptop Shipments Exceed Desktops For The First Time
InformationWeek - All Stories And Blogs —
... . Desktop shipments on the other hand dropped by 1.3% to 38.5 million units. The watershed event was expected, given that laptop shipments have been increasing by double digits for some time, while desktops have been in the low single digits. "However, this marks a major event in the PC market because it marks the start of the age of the notebook," iSuppli analyst Matthew Wilkins said in a statement . "The notebook PC is no longer a tool only for the business market, or a computer for the well-off consumer; it's now a ...
Acer gains serious PC market share, thanks to netbooks
Liliputing —
A report out today from iSuppli claims that global notebook sales surpassed desktop PC sales for the first time last quarter. But I feel like I keep seeing that headline over and over so I’m not going to put too much stock in it. Much more interesting is iSuppli’s finding that Acer’s market share was up 45 percent from the previous quarter, and 79 percent from the same quarter last year. What accounts for the jump in Acer’s standing? Netbooks.

iSuppli Announces Laptopaleolithic Age
Digital Daily —
... While the mobile computing era was obviously born quite a while back, iSuppli’s report would seem to make its advent official. “This marks a major event in the PC market because it marks the start of the age of the notebook,” said Matthew Wilkins, principal analyst for compute platforms at iSuppli. “The notebook PC is no longer a tool only for the business market, or a computer for the well-off consumer; it’s now a computer for everyone. While the third quarter will be remembered as the time when the scale of the global economic/credit crunch truly ...

... desktop PCs declined 1.3 percent over the same period, reaching 38.6 million units. HP commanded the sales charts with 18.8 percent, while Dell reached 13.9 percent, Acer 12.2%, Lenovo fourth with 7.5% and Toshiba got 4.6%. Apple dropped almost half a point compared to the last quarter, reaching 3.2%. However, iSuppli doesn't provide with year-over-year data in their note. The real winner here: Intel, who keeps selling low-power chips for all those notebooks like crazy. [iSuppli via Eetimes]

Wireless Built the Notebook Boom [GigaOM]

... Yesterday’s news that notebooks had overtaken PCs in the number of units sold last quarter owes a huge debt to Wi-Fi and a smaller one to 3G cellular networks. Without those Intel unwired commercials and images of folks surfing the web at Starbucks or sitting in parks, notebooks would still be expensive toys of road warriors. My bet is, in the next decade, those using desktops will be researchers, engineers and people needing access to computers closer in size and ...
Laptops Overtake Desktops–This Time For Real
Technologizer —
... of such stories today. But this one was prompted by a new report from iSuppli that’s pretty darn definitive: It says that global unit sales of notebooks surpassed desktops for the first time in Q3 2008. Unless you want to wait for the day when there are more laptops on the planet than desktops, this is it–laptops have overtaken desktops. Period. Finally. End of need for future Groundhog Day stories on the matter. So can I make a modest proposal? If the majority of personal computers being sold everywhere on earth are laptops, they’re not the variant of the PC they were when ...
