Google to bring Skynet to iPhone in voice recognition update
Infinite Loop —
Have none of the engineers employed by companies like Google ever had enough time off to watch the Terminator trilogy? Companies may have the best of intentions when building artificial intelligence systems that assist with vocal queries from, say, an iPhone, but the rest of us know how this is going to end. Regardless of our impending doom, Google is set to announce an update to its search application that brings these very features to an iPhone near you. Snarky, half-dead film references aside, the New York Times ...
Google Introduces Voice-Enabled Search to iPhone
Wired: Gadget Lab —
While Google waits for it Android mobile operating system to mature, the search giant is launching a sophisticated voice recognition tool for iPhone.
The software, set to release some time Friday, will be part of Google's free, long neglected mobile app [iTunes Link] on iPhone, and it will allow users to perform a Google search by simply dictating a query, according to a story in the New York Times. Examples: "When was Michael Crichton's birthday?" or "Japanese restaurants in San Francisco," or "400 kilometers into miles."
Google's app might sound groundbreaking, but similar speech recognition ...
Google is listening, and iPhone users are talking
The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) —
Filed under: Internet Tools, iPhone According to the New York Times and the Google iPhone page, the big G is about to add voice recognition capabilities to its iPhone search app (iTunes link), with the new version showing up on the App Store any minute now. You'll be able to ask questions (the kind Google can answer, of course; someone else will have to tell you if those pants make you look fat) and get speedy search results returned from the web or your own address book.
The voice recordings from the application will be sent to Google's servers for processing "in the cloud." Given the size of Google's infrastructure ...

Let there be voice! Google Voice Search for iPhone launches
VentureBeat —
Better late than never right? Despite still not being listed on Google’s App Store page, the update to Google Search app, the one containing voice search, is there. Simply click the “Get App” button on this page (within iTunes) and you’ll be able to get it (even if you have the previous version installed).
I’ve been testing it out the past few minutes. While finding tricky words like “parislemon” (the name of my personal blog) doesn’t exactly work (it looked for Paris, London — understandable), using a phrase like “where is sushi?” work beautifully. After a few seconds of ...

Google's iPhone Voice Search Mobile App Now Available [Google]
Gizmodo —
... with talky talky search action is now up. Our own impressions of it are good. When you're not in a noisy place (or another phone is ringing in the background) it can pretty much translate anything you say into a meaningful phrase. "Gizmodo" was understood, surprisingly, as was "bear market" and "bare ass". That's right, it was smart enough to tell the difference between the words bear and bare, depending on the context. If you're an iPhone user, you should go get it now right here. ...
Google Mobile With Voice Search For iPhone Now Available
iPhone Savior —
The highly anticipated Google Mobile app with voice search for iPhone is finally available for download or for upgrading if you're already using the original version. I immediately began test driving the voice search function without delay. Other than my first attempt at searching for iPhone Savior and getting "ice tea" the app was spot on. I enjoyed the alien-like sounds it makes during a search which made me feel like I was communicating with some strange being. When I decided to be a masterful ass clown by speaking the word "fart", on my first attempt Google directed me to "heart" and then ...
Google Mobile App Update With Voice Recognition Finally Available - And it Works
ReadWriteWeb —
Google's highly anticipated update of its Google Mobile App for the iPhone (iTunes link) finally arrived in the App Store this afternoon. The app now uses voice recognition to translate voice commands into search queries. The new version also gives you easy access to all your other Google apps, though the star of this update is obviously the voice recognition, which, in our tests, was amazingly accurate.
Note: the description in iTunes has not been updated yet, but if you follow this link, you can just download and install the new version.

Say what? Google iPhone app does speech search, kinda
TechBlog —
Linkpost | 11.18.2008 | Main November 18, 2008 Say what? Google iPhone app does speech search, kinda googleapp One of my favorite Windows Mobile applications is Microsoft's Windows Live Search, which lets you search for addresses and locations using your voice. It works beautifully, and it's a no-brainer app for a phone, a device primarily designed to be talked to. So I was very excited when the New York Times broke the news last Friday that Google had added voice searching features to its iPhone application . The Google Mobile App didn't appear Friday as writer John Markoff's story promised, but did pop up in the iTunes ...

To control the horse, the player can jump up and down while holding the device in front of them and flick the screen to whip the horse, bounce their legs after placing the device in a back pocket (whip by spanking), or simply by tapping the screen (again, whip by flicking). IBM: Talking Web Will be Commonplace in 5 Years

Every year IBM releases a "Next Five in Five" list, a list of innovations that "have the potential to change the way people work, live and play over the next five years". This is the third such list, and it mentions a "Talking Web" among the 5 items. You will talk to the Web and the Web will talk back, according to IBM. In the future "you will be able to surf the Internet, hands-free, by using your voice - therefore eliminating the need for visuals or keypads."
In fact this is already starting to happen, as recent iPhone releases from Google and Say Where show.

Google Wants Your Vote on Mobile Features
jkOnTheRun —
For some, a new year means a new approach. Google is taking that to heart with their new Product Ideas webpage, a place where people can suggest new features or vote for those already suggested. It’s no surprise to me that Google’s first iteration for product ideas is specific to mobile. Their move into the portable device space with the Android OS coupled with continued enhancement for phone-specific services point to a big mobile year for the search giant.
There are already over 500 submissions, although I’ve see a few repeats in my casual browsing. I’ll be going through the bulk of the list later today and ...
Easter Egg Within Google Mobile App Offers Up a Useful Feature

There’s nothing too crazy included in the easter egg, but one feature I actually found quite useful… Keep reading and I’ll tell you about it.
So how do you uncover the easter egg? Click the ‘Settings’ button at the bottom right, and then continue to swipe up 7 or 8 times. A ‘Bells and Whistles’ menu should appear. Touch to enter the ‘Bells and Whistles’ area and you’ll notice some new options to play around with, ...

Google iPhone App updated for UK and Australia
iGadget Life —
Google Voice Search now for British & Australian iPhone owners
Google have updated their iPhone App for British and Australian citizens to better recognise their accents when using the voice search feature.
Being a Brit I have previously had problems using the Google iPhone App, as most of the time it failed to recognise what I had asked it to search for.
The update to the Google iPhone App has resolved the problem of only understanding American accents. On a dozen or so tests I can say that the App came up trumps with the correct search term each time, a massive improvement.
This has opened up the App ...

While AI doesn't zero in on Blu-ray as one of the two ...
ChaCha Beats Google and Yahoo in Mobile Search Tests
ReadWriteWeb —
But was this a fair fight?
Mobile analyst firm MSearchGroove has just published the results of a series of tests which show that the mobile search service ChaCha beat out two other voice-enabled search applications on the iPhone when it comes to search query accuracy. To test this, the researchers used Google's own mobile application and Vlingo for iPhone, an app that lets you search both Google or Yahoo. Oddly, they ignored Yahoo's mobile app, which also has voice search built in.
The results of their study aren't entirely shocking: if you want to be understood, ask a human, not a ...
