GSM DROID with multitouch pinch-to-zoom demoed on video
Engadget — ... in Europe, has multitouch built-in to the UI. For reasons we can only assume have something to do with an unspoken intellectual property agreement between Google and Apple, the US version of the user interface lacks multi-touch features like pinch-to-zoom even though the underlying 2.0 OS supports multitouch events. However, the video of a GSM DROID headed to Europe clearly shows this feature at the 3 minute mark. No really, see for yourselves after the break. GSM Motorola Droid (aka Milestone) Gets Multi-Touch Support!? [Droid]
Gizmodo — ... that the GSM version of the Motorola Droid will support multi-touch gestures like pinch-zoom. The U.S version doesn't do multi-touch, even though Android 2.0 supports it, so what gives? Maybe it goes back to the whole multi-touch patent issue with Apple, I don't know. If it turns out the Milestone does indeed have multi-touch when it arrives on November 9, hopefully some sort of patch hack will make its way State-side. [Mobile-Review (translated) via SlashGear] ...

Droid Heads to Europe — Picks up Multitouch on the Way
jkOnTheRun — ... to provide pinch and zoom in the photo app and web browser. Android 2.0 does support multitouch, as can the Droid hardware, so the lack of pinch and zoom seems to be a conscious decision on someone’s part. The GSM version of the Droid, dubbed the Milestone, has gained multitouch in both the photo gallery app and the web browser. Could there be multitouch hope for the U.S. version on Verizon? Nokia scraps N-Gage, Motorola Droid becomes Milestone in Europe, and Bell to get Omnia II exclusive
PHONE Magazine — ... The slick Motorola DROID is making big waves in the US with some saying the device is the best Android phone yet. The DROID is set to hit Europe with a new name called MILESTONE later this month. The device will sport multitouch and Android 2.0 though some reports have the MILESTONE lacking the cool Google Maps Navigation feature the DROID offers in the states. ...

★ Pinching and the Droid
Daring Fireball — ... As noted by Chris Davies at Slash Gear, the demo clearly shows support for pinch-to-zoom in both the Photos app (around the 3:00 mark) and web browser (around the 5:45 mark). In both cases, pinch-zooming on the Milestone seems very jerky — the zooming seems to happen all at once after the pinch gesture stops, very much unlike on the iPhone, where zooming smoothly animates live, as you pinch. My sources suggest that this is a Motorola customization, not code from Google. (Likewise for multi-touch gestures supported by HTC Android phones.) ...

European Motorola MILESTONE (Droid) Offers Multi-Touch
iSmashPhone - Turn your Phone into your MyPhone — ... The GSM avatar of the Android based Motorola MILESTONE has something extra to offer than its CDMA cousins. European MILESTONE users will be able enjoy multi-touch capabilities, something which isn’t standard on the Android OS. Now why potential US users have been shortchanged remains a mystery but the MILESTONE still looks like a promising device (yes we are aware its Motorola) with features like a 5-megapixel camera, a 3.7-inch capacitive touchscreen and a slide-out QWERTY keyboard . ...

Giz Explains: Android, and How It Will Take Over the World [Giz Explains]
Gizmodo — ... , but technically speaking, it's not a part of Android. It's just part of an app made by Google for Android, and that'll ship with most Android handsets. Except for in countries where Google doesn't have their mapping data quite together enough, where it won't. That's what's happening with the Euro Droid, which, by the way, does have multitouch in its browser, like the Hero. That's why the distinction matters. ...
