Microsoft’s Windows 7 line-up: The good, the bad and the ugly
All about Microsoft —
... a lot of lessons from Vista — among them, that too many SKUs with too few justifications created customer confusion. Microsoft is putting the bulk of its marketing dollars and muscle behind just two of the Windows 7 SKUs: Windows 7 Home Premium and Windows 7 Professional. “We think over 80 percent of customers will be on those two SKUs,” Bill Veghte, Senior Vice President of the Windows business said. “That’s where we are putting our marketing focus.” Another positive: The era of Ultimate promises (and failures) is over. Microsoft is making sure that each, successive version ...

The word on the street today said that Microsoft was going to confirm the SKUs today for the different versions of the upcoming Windows 7. Speculation has been bouncing around that we’d see a special “Netbook” edition of Windows 7 due to licensing cost issues but the list that has apparently been confirmed by Microsoft is missing that one. Here’s what is being reported:
Windows 7 Starter
Windows 7 Home Basic (for emerging markets)
Windows 7 Home Premium
Windows 7 Professional
Windows 7 Enterprise
Windows 7 Ultimate
If this list holds up ...

Microsoft to offer crippled version of Windows 7 for netbooks
Liliputing —
As we’ve already seen time and again, Windows 7 Beta runs great on netbooks, even though the beta is basically an early build of Windows 7 Ultimate, which will be the most expensive version of the OS.
Windows 7 boots, launches programs, and performs more CPU intensive tasks just about as quickly as Windows XP, all while providing extra eye candy and features like live thumbnail previews of running programs from the taskbar. But Microsoft charges a fair bit of cash for a full version of an operating system, so I don’t think anybody expected Microsoft to offer low cost Windows 7 ...

There are no fewer than seven versions of Vista, though only four are of interest to most users. Now, Windows 7 is all about fixing a lot of the issues surrounding Vista, but its marketing may not be one of them. Microsoft has announced the list of Windows 7 versions, and there will be six. And Mary Jo Foley at ZDNet says there are actually even more , thanks to ...

Despite what we hoped in thinking that Microsoft may have learned a lesson with the many available versions for Windows Vista, it seems they are determined to make the same mistake with Windows 7. So, just how many versions are we talking about? Six in total, and if you ask me, that is about three or four more than we need. Of course, it may not be all that terrible considering most consumers will only have to choose between Home Premium, Professional and possibly Starter. All-in-all, here are the versions will see and a little glimpse into ...

Alice Hill's Real Tech News - Independent Tech —
windows7.jpg By Michael Santo Editor-in-Chief, RealTechNews Word was that Microsoft would announce the list of SKUs for Windows 7 on Feb. 3rd, and that’s what happened. Unfortunately for those of us hoping to see something like Windows XP, with two versions, we didn’t get our wish. Here’s the list that Microsoft has confirmed : Despite the long list, Microsoft said in a press release that they would emphasize two versions: Home Premium and Professional . Based on how well Microsoft did with the Windows Vista version of Ultimate, I might actually stay away from that this time. And no netbook-specific version of ...
