Major media giants to form joint venture for digital future, says WSJ

News Corp, Time Inc., Condé Nast Publications Inc., Hearst Corp., and Meredith Corp. If this Wall Street Journal report is to be believed here, these five major media firms are preparing to announce a new joint venture tomorrow to "prepare print publications for a new generation of electronic readers and other digital devices." Details are a bit sketchy here, and what makes it more interesting / confounding is that many of these companies already have or have showcased separate initiatives, such as Hearst's Skiff and tablet demos from both ...

... news follows a Nov. 24 report that said 50 publishers were “within weeks” of announcing a similar consortium. The group had met with e-reader makers, including Apple, on creating an iTunes-like magazine kiosk, according to The New York Observer . Apple reportedly is preparing a tablet for introduction in 2010. As part of the roll-out, the Cupertino, Calif. company is talking with publishers about ways to develop content for the device. Seeing as tablets still haven’t reached the level of popularity they would need to for this to be a legitimate tactic, there still an awful lot of information lacking. There’s no news on pricing structure, DRM, when it’ll arrive, how they’re going to use it (Adobe Air still seems likely). It just seems like they’re waiting for the iTablet to arrive, galvanize the market, and then they can unveil the plan.
