FolderShare becomes Windows Live Sync. So what about Live Mesh?
jkOnTheRun —
It's hard not to ask the question that many folks are already asking over on the Windows Live FolderShare Team blog. In reaction to an announcement that FolderShare is going away and getting replaced with Windows Live Sync, the obvious question is: why Live Sync and not Live Mesh? It's a fair puzzle to be perplexed over and it echoes the same sentiment we've had for a few years now: why have all of these overlapping tools in the Windows Live world?
I'm sure there are very good technical or platform reasons that these overlaps exist. Perhaps too much time, effort and money have been thrown at some ...

Steve Ballmer may be Microsoft's CEO, but Chief Software Architect Ray Ozzie is the more important "man behind the curtain." Tasked with filling Bill Gates' massive computing shoes since 2006, Ozzie's main focus has been helping to revamp MSFT's products and services so that they're relevant to the Web 2.0 generation—with the entrenched development team kicking and screaming the whole time. In a lengthy Wired profile, Ozzie lays out some of the steps MSFT has taken and continues to take in its quest to maintain supremacy both on- and offline:

Live Mesh upgrades for Mac, Mobile and Desktop
jkOnTheRun —
... The Live Mesh client for Windows will also be getting an update, but that's not planned until next week. Altough there are several great cloud or web synchronization services out there, I highly recommend you give Live Mesh a look. Like some of my other faves, it supports cross-platform synchronization (Windows and Mac) which is key for many mobile users. I also like the Live Desktop feature which is a virtual desktop with all of your data that can be accessed from any computer over the web. ...
Soonr Brings Desktop Documents to Your iPhone [jkOnTheRun]
GigaOM Network —
Soonr brings a nice application to the iPhone today which looks to be a real productivity booster. Check the video demonstration below or the press release (PDF) and you’ll see why I think that. The free application helps bridge the gap between your desktop and your iPhone thanks to the cloud. I expect we’ll see many more services like this in 2009 as 3G and WiFi hotspots continue expanding in terms of availability, not to mention decreased online storage costs.
Like the Dropbox web app on my iPhone, Soonr provides mobile access to your documents at home. The service synchronizes ...

Google Web Drive online storage service tipped in Picasa
SlashGear —
Google could be developing a new online storage system, if a screenshot from the new version of Picasa for Mac is to be believed. The image shows a new entry to the “Move to Collection” menu option, listing “Google Web Drive” among the usual array of folders and shortcuts.
Given Picasa users’ typically large photo libraries, and Google’s growing storage offering to GMail users, it seems entirely possible that the company is planning to launch an online backup service. Hacks and methods to use GMail as a storage system have been circulating almost since ...

Regretful upgrade: Snow Leopard incompatibilities
ZDNet News - News Page One —
By Rafe Needleman CNET News Posted on ZDNet News : Sep 01, 2009 1:38:49 PM Apple's $29 operating-system upgrade, Snow Leopard, is for most users a straightforward and worthwhile upgrade. But some are regretting their haste in upgrading to Mac OS X 10.6. Little incompatibilities with existing apps are causing headaches and slowing down work flow. It's not the current versions of the big apps that don't work, of course. The latest version of Photoshop still runs. Even the current versions of the close-to-the-metal virtualization applications Parallels and VMware Fusion work in Snow Leopard. Apple's own apps--Mail, Calendar, ...
