Ok, deep breaths. LG clearly has its sights set high and the continued quality of the handsets it churns out is promising. At the same time, the manufacturer has yet to shine where innovation is concerned — something it will certainly need to do if it plans to make a real run at passing Samsung for the number two spot. Sweating yet, Sammy?

According to an article on unwiredview, LG has made several big steps in mobile phone marketing over the past few years but they aren’t going to stop there.
Word has it that LG’s president for mobile business, Ahn Seung-kwon, during an interview with the Yonhap News Agency has said LG plans on becoming the number 2 mobile phone manufacturer in the world by 2012.
This then mean that LG is planning to overtake rival Samsung within the next tree years to grab that number 2 slot behind number 1 Nokia. ...

What in the hell is LG Mobile’s president smoking because this is the most absurd thing I’ve ever read. Becoming the #2 mobile phone maker in three years is one thing considering the fact that Samsung could and would destroy them at any time. But a new Black Label device to compete with the iPhone? Or a luxe brand on par with Nokia’s Vertu? Keep dreaming, Ahn.

LG is also planning to become 2nd ranked cellphone manufacturer by 2010 by overtaking its arch rival Samsung which is now at 2nd spot. Right now LG is holding 3rd postion in cellphone manufacturing. LG has to come up with some innovative products and some good business business strategy to come to second spot as beating Samsung is no joke. It will be interesting to see how LG unfolds its new products in coming months.
