Ofcom has changed the terms of the Multiplex B licence, allowing the upgrade and reorganisation of the airwaves for the digital terrestrial broadcast of HD television. Although it was more or less a formality that Ofcom would agree to change the terms of BBC Free to View Limited's licence on Multiplex B, it is another reminder that HD Freeview television is stepping closer to reality. JVC has announced that it will be shipping the world's slimmest 32-inch LCD panel in Japan this August. The GD-32X1's panel is just 6.4mm at its thinnest point, although it widens at its base to a positively obese 22.5mm The set is a Full HD LCD using JVC's new 36-bit Genessa Picture Engine that can reproduce 100 per cent of the sRGB colour space and 90 per cent of Adobe RGB (with special display modes for digital SLR cameras). Sky News HD will launch in Spring 2010, with the rolling news channel the latest of the Sky channel to take the leap to the high-definition broadcasts. Sky is one of the driving forces behind the take-up of HD in the UK, with the likes of the broadcaster's sports channels already broadcast in high-definition. Five has been handed a high definition channel slot in Freeview HD, when the capacity is made available. Despite Channel 4's interest in taking a second slot – for its E4 programming – Ofcom has plumped for Five – the fourth major terrestrial broadcaster, as long as it reaches the necessary criteria by December 31 this year. Five will not be broadcasting full time HD, but instead will simulcast during peak evening hours by the end of 2010, although Freeview HD may not arrive in some UK television regions until the very end of 2012.
