Steve Jobs concisely answers the MacBook FireWire question
Infinite Loop — ... from the 13" MacBook has certainly stirred a lot of consternation among the Mac faithful. But when asked via e-mail about editing home video with the latest MacBook, The Steve just had this to say : "Actually, all of the new HD camcorders of the past few years use USB 2." Apple eliminated FireWire from iPods several years ago, since it allowed slimming down of iPods and made the nano and shuffle possible. Even external hard drives rarely have a FW400 port; FW800 ...

FireWire Isn’t Alone: A Brief History of Features Apple Has Killed
Technologizer — ... , 49% of respondents are pretty ticked off, and 85% think FireWire still has life in it; only 10 percent applaud Apple’s decision. It looks like Steve Jobs isn’t terribly sympathetic: He allegedly sent a brief e-mail to an unhappy customer pointing out that USB has been standard equipment on new HD camcorders for several years .
