Internet Explorer 8 Has Arrived
ReadWriteWeb —
After more than a year of beta testing, Microsoft released version 8 of Internet Explorer today. IE8 is definitely a better browser than IE7, and features quite a few important new functions, including accelerators, and web slices. IE8 is also significantly faster than IE7 and features a large number of new functions that make browsing the web easier and more secure.

IE8 Launches: Do Web Workers Even Care? [WebWorkerDaily]
GigaOM Network —
... Microsoft launches IE8 to the public this morning; you can now download it from the Microsoft web site. But do most web workers even care? Hands on with Internet Explorer 8

... make it all better. I don't have a great solution here. Microsoft is right to take a more standards-oriented approach to the web, but it is about to alienate, anger, and confuse millions of people who don't understand what's happening, and who frankly don't care, either. They just want the web to work, without fuss and without complaint, and for all of those users out there, well, my advice is to use a different browser, one that won't give you so many headaches. Want to try anyway? It's available here . Full disclosure: Yahoo! Search Suggestions are available as an option ...

What's the coolest thing about IE8 (besides p_rn mode)?
The Seattle Times: Brier Dudley's blog —
My favorite feature so far in Internet Explorer 8, the new browser that Microsoft launched today:
Fine-tuned cookie handling. And not just because I'm still recovering from the latest Girl Scout fundraiser.
It's a good habit to purge the temporary files, cookies and other browsing detritus that can bog down your system. But it's also a headache, because you can end up zapping useful cookies that remember passwords and settings at Web sites you use regularly.
With IE8, you can clear the cache of temporary files, cookies and other browsing detritus, but ...

Internet Explorer 8 has many useful features that will improve the way you search and browse the web, even though not all of them are innovative. IE 8: Losing ground and attracting complaints

... the current complaints and the company’s response to them is yet to be seen, however, it is undeniably even if not unpredictably a thorn in its side once again. Last week Safari, Firefox and IE8 all failed to resist hack attempts at Pwn2Own with Safari performing the worst out of the bunch. Interestingly the only browser that wasn’t cracked over the course of a few hours (Safari gave up in minutes!) was Google Chrome, although vulnerablities were found to be present. If you’d like to download IE8 and check it out for yourself then what are you waiting for! If you like what ...

It’s a good word for hard times.
The implication is that, while open source may be cool and wonderful, aligning with Microsoft can make you some money.

All this came out during the company’s MIX 09 event, at which the launch of IE 8 was supposed to be the headline.
Instead the new browser was lost in a larger code dump, as described by TechRepublic’s Justin James, while the real action was taking place at ...

Oops. Bing Is Now Your Default Search Engine On IE6, Whether You Like It Or Not
TechCrunch —
For years, Microsoft has tried to shrug off its reputation as a monopolistic tyrant. Today comes news that seems to undermine those efforts pretty badly.
The Next Web reports that users of Internet Explorer 6 are being forced to use Bing as their default search engine — even if they’ve manually switched their preference to another search provider, like Google. Attempts to switch the browser to something other than Bing results in an error message.
Now, let’s set aside the fact that IE6 is a scourge on the web that opens users up to a wide array of critical security issues and forces developers to ...
Why Opera 10 Could Make Firefox an Endangered Species
Internet Evolution: —
... (Nasdaq: MSFT)s Internet Explorer 8 are all quite fast. Which is fastest? It depends on what page and what kind of content youre loading (my own personal testing indicates Opera holds a slight edge in Java script; CSS-heavy pages might barely favor the new Firefox; and heavily trafficked pages tend to do well in Internet Explorer 8). Notably, Firefox and Opera both support most of the new, richer Web standards like CSS3, Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG), XML, and data URIs, some of which Microsofts IE 8 fails to directly support (such as SVG). So, ultimately the browser ...

MSFT Wishes You Happy Porn Browsing in New Vomit-Filled Video, Then Retracts Ad
ReadWriteWeb —
Under waves of ever-increasing competition from Mozilla, Safari, and Google, Microsoft has released a series of PSA-style online videos to promote Internet Explorer 8.
Featuring onetime Lois and Clark actor Dean Cain (who has apparently become the poor man's Bruce Campbell), the ads are uncharacteristically hip and discuss such real-world Internet problems as the fear of missing something (a.k.a. insomnia by social media) and the fear of your S.O. finding your porn cache. However, at least one of the video was just too cool for Microsoft. ...

The logos of Google Chrome, Firefox, and IE8 appear right next to the text.

Internet Explorer 6, the browser that will not die
L.A. Times Tech Blog —
... Good news for fans of Internet Explorer 6, the version of Microsoft's online browser that debuted in 2001. Even though the company is now up to its eighth version of the browser, it will continue to support IE6 until at least 2014. Not that Microsoft is happy about that. "Friends do not let friends use IE6," said Microsoft's Amy Barzdukas, in an interview with BBC News. The company wants Internet users to upgrade to IE8, which is also free. And many developers don't want to bother making their products conform to IE6. Mark ...

Windows 7 networking guide

I've been looking a lot lately into high-end Windows 7 networking features like URL Quality of Service (QoS)-based traffic management and Secure Remote Connect . There is a lot to like here, and yes I am a Linux guy saying that, but I've also noticed that many of Windows 7's best networking features are only available if you use Windows 7 Enterprise Edition . Furthermore, to get most of these high-end business features to show their stuff you'll also need Windows Server 2008 R2 on the server end. I find this more than a little annoying. Microsoft's business has always been about locking users in to buying the ...
