BW uncovers BlackBerry Bold teardown; hello profit margin
Boy Genius Report —
BusinessWeek has managed to get its hands on a teardown of the BlackBerry Bold and it looks like RIM has yet another reason to be upset about the ever-delayed AT&T release: huge margins. While the Bold is currently available in many markets around the world, RIM’s largest market, the US, is still in limbo. New information suggests that said delays may be costing RIM more money than we think. Self-proclaimed market intelligence firm iSuppli is known for pretty spot-on teardown analyses and after picking apart RIM’s Bold it came up with a ...
Building the BlackBerry Bold
IntoMobile - Cell Phone News, Information, and Analysis —
... I think you’ll notice a bit of a markup? Breaking it down a little bit further, the materials for the Bold cost $158.16, and assembly/testing costs only $11.25.
Also of interest (to me anyway) is the BlackBerry Curve apparently costs RIM $103.00 in materials. No details on how much the Pearl or Pearl Flip cost in materials… But if I had to guess, the Pearl would probably come in around $60 - $80 per unit. Interesting stuff!

BlackBerry Bold costs $170 to make: sells for $350
PR News: —
... they have managed to come up with some figures. Parts and materials for the Bold comes to just $158.16, with assembly and testing costs coming to $11.25, that a total cost of $169.41.
IF RIM was to sell the BlackBerry for $350 that would mean a markup of $45, before R&D sosts and software. Carriers then have to pay for marketing and shipping costs, as well as freebies that they might give away. Either way, there is still a lot of profit for each handset.
