The Apple iMac 27″ model can take up to 16GB of RAM that is located on the bottom edge of the screen behind an access door. This is easily accessed with 3 screws.
After removing the large sheet of glass covering the front of the device and a number of screw removals later the LCD panel also came out. The LCD panel is a hefty part of the unit weighing 11 lbs on it’s own.

... that the glass was not aligned correctly before it started the teardown, which I wouldn’t expect given Apple's notoriety for quality. After gutting the machine, the panel was found to be made by LG for Apple. It seems that the only thing you can upgrade yourself without getting into major surgery is the RAM on the new machines.
