Is Google Going Better Than Free On Navigation? Will That Set Off Antitrust Alarms?
Techdirt — A few friends have passed along Bill Gurley's excellent (as usual) analysis of how Google is disrupting the navigation market by ditching the two big players in the space (Tele Atlas and Navteq), going it alone and also (the big news) offering its navigation info for free. Gurley points out that the truly disruptive part is that Google is actually offering mobile operators a deal that is better than free, in that they get to share in some of the ad revenue associated with anyone using the services. The point is pretty clear: those who are relying on the old business model of getting paid for navigation info are likely in serious trouble. Of course, there are some perception issues. ...

Rumor Has It: China Ontrade Reveals iPhone 4 Part
TheAppleBlog — China Ontrade, a wholesale parts distributor that ships pre-production parts from upcoming devices, has just posted a part it calls the “Apple iPhone 4 Generation Midboard.” While not particularly pretty to look at, or indicative of any exciting new features for the upcoming model, the part is tantalizing because it represents the first piece of leaked, hard info potentially ...

Data's one-two punch in open-source business models
The Open Road — (Credit: Dan Farber/CNET News) Some of us take longer than others. Tim O'Reilly moved on years ago from talking about open-source licenses and instead focused on the importance of data to business success. In the open-source industry, we heard his words but clearly didn't understand them. We kept selling software through our "awkward teenage ...

The "Other" Entrepreneurship; Inside Intuit
Inc.com — Private companies still cutting back. A new employment report from ADP estimates that private companies cut another 203,000 jobs in October, Bloomberg reports. The good news? That's down from a decline of 227,000 in September. The bad? "I’m still expecting to see payroll employment decline probably through the end of the year," Joel Prakken, chairman of Macroeconomic Advisers, told Bloomberg, "not turn up until January or February." Google's definition of disruption: the "less than free" business model. Benchmark Capital's Bill Gurley considers himself an aficionado of business disruption. Think game-changing movements like software-as-a-service, open source software, ...

O'Reilly Radar - Insight, analysis, and research about emerging technologies. — Chumby One (Bunnie Huang) -- new Chumby product released. In addition to being about half the price of the original chumby, the new device added some features: it has an FM radio, and it has support for a rechargeable lithium ion battery (although it’s not included with the device, you have to buy one and install it yourself). There’s also a knob so you can easily/quickly adjust the volume. But I don’t think those are really the significant new features. What really gets me excited about this one is that it’s much more hackable. Deep Tracing of Internet Explorer (John Resig) -- very sexy deep inspection of Internet Explorer. Finally, ...

Some thoughts on Android
Dean Bubley's Disruptive Wireless — I'm slowly starting to become a bit more positive about Android. I've been in the US for most of the last week, and it was interesting to see how many "normal" people had Android devices, compared with the UK where it's still viewed as geektastic. Google's introduction of free turn-by-turn navigation is a bit of a smart move too: this article ...
