Platform Monetization is a Two Way Street: Lessons from Facebook and Sun Microsystems
Dare Obasanjo aka Carnage4Life —
Over the past few days I've been mulling over the recent news from Yahoo! that they
are building a Facebook-like platform based on OpenSocial. I find this interesting
given that a number of people have come to the conclusion that Facebook is slowly
killing it's widget platform in order to replace it with Facebook
Connect.
The key reason developers believe Facebook is killing of its platform is captured
in Nick O'Neill's post entitled Scott
Rafer: The Facebook Platform is Dead which states
When speaking at the Facebook developer conference today in Berlin, Scott Rafer

... year a smug, cocky 23-year-old CEO held an audience captive during an interview that was as strange as the boy-wonder. This year, that same CEO, Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg seemed just as smug but oddly more at peace with where his company sits. He practically gloated about the Microsoft investment, and said that the Microsoft-related revenue Facebook is getting is waning and implied that it wasn't really that strategic to begin with. Whatever you think of the hubris, the companys Connect gambit is the real deal, and if they can pull it off, the social network competitive ...
Citysearch Becomes More Social and Mobile

Citysearch, the popular local restaurant and shopping guide, announced a new beta version of its service tonight. What Does Everyone Think About Facebook Connect?
WebProNews Feed —
[image] Just Another Beacon? Facebook Connect was announced back in May and has just recently begun to see the light of day. Since the announcement, the obligatory privacy concerns have been raised, but Facebook hoping to nip that in the bud has made it very clear that users can choose whether or not they wish to share information, a feature that was also available with the resurfacing of Beacon a while back. We believe the next evolution of data portability is about much more than data. It s about giving users the ability to take their identity and friends with them around the Web, while being able to trust that their ...

As Facebook Connect Expands, OpenID's Challenges Grow
Wired: Epicenter —
On Monday, Facebook announced it will soon roll out its Facebook Connect login system to several high-profile websites, including Digg, Hulu and Discovery.com. The sites, along with a few others, will begin supporting Facebook Connect within a few weeks. The New York Times has the scoop.
The news is sure to be welcomed by Facebook's 120 million users and its potential partners, but it presents a new challenge to proponents of the so-called "open stack" for ID management -- OpenID, OAuth and the related technologies that allow users to share data across multiple websites.

Facebook and Its Partners - What Are They Up To?
louisgray.com —
By Mona Nomura of Pixel Bits (FriendFeed/Twitter) If the Internet is like high school, Facebook is like the new kid embraced by the in crowd - just by existing. Despite no monetization track record and a no clear revenue model, Microsoft believes in them - to the tune of 240 million dollars worth of trust. They are also partnered with one of the silent giants, Salesforce.com, the CRM database software corporation behind a lot of sites we use. Facebook has overcome controversial privacy issues, and keeps growing, despite continued complaints about ...
