Dell unveils the Inspiron Mini 10

Dell rounds out their netbook product lineup by announcing the new 10 inch Inspiron Mini 10. The system is available for pre-order now over at QVC and will be available for purchase directly from Dell in the U.S. and other countries starting on Feb. 26th. Hitting up QVC makes a great deal of sense for Dell because it allows them to go after the stay-at-home population which is arguably hot for netbooks these days.

The new mini will sport a 10.1-inch display, 802.11b/g WiFi, optional Bluetooth 2.1, HDMI out, an external DVD drive, upwards of 160GB of HDD space, 1GB of RAM, a keyboard that’s 92 percent the size of a standard laptop (that’s the same as on ASUS’ Eee PC 1000HE, by the way), a multitouch trackpad, 720p media playback, optional WWAN, an internal TV tuner and your choice of a 3-cell (3 hours) or 6-cell (6.5 hours) battery.

The long-awaited Dell Inspiron Mini 10 has finally made an appearance on the company’s US website, complete with full specifications and a gallery. Confirmed are the 10.1-inch display, running at 1024 x 576 16:9 with glossy finish, a choice of Intel Atom Z520 and Z530 processors (1.33GHz and 1.6GHz respectively), 1GB of RAM and either 120GB, 160GB or 250GB of storage.

After a long travel day to Las Vegas, I get to catch up on the news I missed yesterday. There’s plenty that happened; it usually does the day before a big mobile technology convention like CTIA. But what struck me outside of the mobile handset news floating around is Engadget’s bit on the rather inexpensive option Dell added to the Mini 10 netbook. For $35, you can move from a 1024×576 display to one with 1366×768 resolution. That’s a wee bit better than what you need for high definition 720p video and one heck of a good value for the price.
The higher resolution should also help when web browsing, which is the big value here ...

Dell have announced that their ATSC TV tuner option for the Inspiron Mini 10 will go on offer today, together with two new color options. The TV tuner will cost an extra $50 on top of the netbooks’ basic $299 price tag, and offer access to over-the-air HD broadcasts.
While the tuner itself is internal, it will use an external two-aerial antenna, as shown in the photo above. As for the new colors, they will be “passion purple” and a new cherry red hue as part of the (PRODUCT) RED charity scheme. Dell will donate $5 to the Global Fund for every such Mini 10 sold.
