... Connectify.me is a new service we just found out about. They've sussed out how to make any Windows 7 computer into a WiFi hotspot. Since we just installed Windows 7 on a spare laptop, we figured it was about time to make Windows do something cool, so we installed the app. ...
Connectify Creates a 3G Hotspot with your Windows 7 Computer [jkOnTheRun]
GigaOM Network —
As mobile enthusiasts, we really can’t live without our connectivity. James bought a MiFi device for his, while I use a mish-mash of methods including a Boingo Wi-Fi account, a 3G data plan with Verizon Wireless and Internet Tethering on my iPhone as a backup. There’s a number of ways to share our 3G connections — the MiFi does it natively — but Windows 7 adds a new feature that one company is already taking advantage of. Microsoft added Virtual Wi-Fi, which uses software to virtualize one or more hardware wireless adapters. ReadWriteWeb notes that ...
Connectify Is Early Evidence of Why Win7’s “Virtual Wi-Fi” Matters [GigaOM]
GigaOM Network —
Microsoft’s Windows 7 operating system, as we noted when it rolled out last week, contains a highly interesting software layer — invented and developed at the company’s in-house research division — that enables “virtual Wi-Fi.” Essentially, it allows a user ...
Turn Windows 7 into a Hotspot
Wi-Fi Networking News —
Clever use of built-in Windows 7 networking from Connectify: The beta version of Connectify for Windows 7 uses the OS's ability to create a software access point and a virtual Wi-Fi adapter while still remaining connected to an infrastructure Wi-Fi network. This Windows 7 feature virtualizes the Wi-Fi network connection, allowing a separate client and access point function to operate as separate virtual devices using the same radio channel and same hardware. Some advantages over ad hoc networking, just like with the upcoming Wi-Fi Direct technology, is the use of ...
New app turns your PC into Wi-Fi hotspot
Techradar - All the latest technology news —
A group of developers has exploited a hidden element of Windows 7 to turn any PC running the OS into a Wi-Fi hotspot with an application called Connectify. Nomadio, consultants for military networks, used some software (known as Virtual Wi-Fi) buried within the OS, left over from a MS research group project, but apparently discontinued in 2006, according to TechWorld. "A year ago, Microsoft talked a lot about this as a big feature in Windows 7. But driver support didn't get finished. The low-level code is in there, but the driver-level stuff isn't," said Alex Gizis, CEO of ...
Secret software turns Win 7 into a Wi-Fi access point
CrunchGear —
Way back in 2008, Microsoft wanted to add a feature to laptops that would allow them to become wireless access points when connected to Ethernet. The feature, which appeared on the Win7 roll-out list, is missing from the finished product but may be closer than we think.
By downloading Connectify, you can enable the Win7 feature and create a wireless connection. It’s in Beta right now so beware. However, it’s a cool little feature, especially if you need to share a single Ethernet cable with the whole office.

Connectify turns Windows 7 laptops into Wi-Fi hotspots
TechSpot —
Few years ago a little-known feature called Virtual Wi-Fi was crafted by Microsoft's research group as a way to "virtualize" one wireless card as several separate adapters in Windows. The project was discontinued in 2006, but some of the code apparently made its way into Windows 7, and now at least one company is taking advantage of it with a new application that can turn any laptop into a wireless access point. Sharing Broadband and More
Working Anywhere —
While tethering on the iPhone in the USA remains a bit of a challenge (especially if your updated to the latest version of firmware on the Apple iPhone) there are other options emerging.
For years Apple Macintosh users have been able to turn a Mac that is hard wired to an Ethernet connection into a hotspot, but now the new Windows 7 OS from Microsoft has been turned into both a hotspot and a wireless bridge via Connectify.
Connectify.me is where you can find it.
Another way to share wireless broadband is Joikuspot, and now their new Boost (Beta) allows users ...
Unfinished Windows 7 feature exploited for virtual WiFi hotspots
Engadget —
It wasn't all that long ago that Microsoft was talking up the Virtual WiFi feature developed by Microsoft Research and set for inclusion in Windows 7, but something got lost along the road to release day, and the functionality never officially made it into the OS. As you might ...

Windows 7 Gets True Software Base Station before Mac OS X
TidBITS: Mac News for the Rest of Us —
I dislike turning comparisons between Windows and Mac OS X into a battle of Rock'em Sock'em Robots. But Apple's neglect of a feature it invented, and Microsoft's picking up the baton, makes it worth pointing out how the Redmond operating system maker got it right - and what Apple needs to do for its own users.
Apple was the first OS maker to make it possible to turn a computer into what looks to other devices like a hardware base station - technically, an infrastructure mode Wi-Fi access point. An infrastructure access point is the hub to which Wi-Fi clients (_stations_) connect. The access ...
