Bill Gates did something unusual today at the TED genius-fest: He unleashed a swarm of live mosquitoes into the audience. No, he wasn't promoting Windows Vista. He was making the point that "not only poor people should experience this," by which I guess he meant the experience of being abused by a billionaire. Just kidding. He was talking about malaria. Anyway, it was a good day to not be at TED.

Techflash confirms the expected: the mosquitoes weren’t carrying malaria. But I think he still scared - and pissed off - a few people in the crowd. Up next: Gates campaigns for better internet security, aims to raise awareness about viruses… and trojans?

After decades of mellow, academic keynotes, could he get radical in his quest to raise awareness of social and health issues?

- Have Nordstrom outfit a few people lined up at the unemployment office, then add them to the mix of suits at the Microsoft CEO Summit in May.
