Engadget has full pdfs of the suit; in it, AT&T hones in on the maps that Verizon shows in the TV commercials, arguing that the map of its 3G network (with large gaps of white space where there is 2G service—but not 3G) could lead consumers to think that AT&T offers incomplete U.S. coverage overall. ...

“By communicating that AT&T customers have no coverage in large parts of the country, Verizon is misleading the public about an essential component of the services AT&T offers,” the company said. ... service outside of the 3G coverage areas on the map that they have created. The map was split into red and blue, the former represents Verizon while the latter represents AT&T.
The maps are misleading as Verizon’s entire network is 3G, which is why it shows so many service gaps when it comes to AT&T’s map. They fail to say that the service gaps on AT&T may well be covered by its 2G network.

... down to just the actual maps being depicted. It would seem the big V has been displaying a map of it’s 3G coverage (aka all it’s coverage) vs. a map of AT&T’s 3G coverage – and kindly failing to mention that in some of those huge gaps there’s 2G coverage.
AT&T says: “Hey, stop misleading consumers into thinking we don’t have any coverage at all in those areas”.
Verizon says: .. I guess?.. “Ok.”

This, however, was not enough for AT&T.; From their lawsuit: By continuing to use a "3G" coverage map in its advertisements, Verizon is still conveying the message that AT&T; has no coverage in the white or blank space included in the map, and thus AT&T; customers cannot use their phones in large portions of the United States. AT&T sues Verizon, Verizon releases new Droid ad
Seth H. Weintraub's blog —
AT&T is suing Verizon for their recent "There's a map for that" ad campaign. They complain that the maps that Verizon publishes could confuse people (even though they are clearly stating "3G Access") into thinking the white spaces on the map represent areas where AT&T doesn't have coverage. Here's the ad in question: I'm no lawyer, but I think the complaint is pretty weak. This is just good advertising. Point out a weakness that potential customers care about and exploit it. AT&T should focus on fixing their own network, not suing people for pointing out how bad it is. In ...
AT&T Sues Verizon Over 'There's A Map For That' Ad Campaign
Techdirt —
... came up with a rather clever ad campaign, mocking the iPhone ads that claim "there's an app for that" with ads that showcase Verizon's wider 3G footprint, claiming "there's a map for that," and showing the two services' 3G coverage maps side by side:
It does a nice job poking fun at one of AT&T's weaker points: its mobile network infrastructure. But apparently, AT&T is not happy with the ad campaign and has sued Verizon over those ads, claiming that it uses an unfair comparison. ...
AT&T Sues Verizon Over a TV Commercial
GeekSugar —
... I can see how the side-by-side view of the maps could be misleading, but Verizon isn't fudging any numbers. The maps in the commercial show 3G network coverage for both providers. The difference is, where there are holes in Verizon's maps there isn't coverage. On the AT&T map, much of the white areas not covered by 3G, AT&T's 2G network is offered. Apparently Verizon did add a disclaimer to the ad, but AT&T is still dissatisfied. ...

AT&T sues Verizon, calls map ad a bum steer
GMSV —
... “) seem to have burrowed under the skin of the target, causing enough irritation to warrant professional attention. On Tuesday, AT&T sued Verizon for false advertising , not because there was anything actually false in the ads, but because viewers might not understand the graphics. The commercials show two maps clearly labeled as the 3G coverage areas of the respective carriers, with Verizon red almost filling in the nation’s outline and AT&T blue in scattered patches across a landscape of white. The problem, says AT&T, is that a lot of people looking at the blue map think it ...

AT&T sees red over Verizon's "There's a map for that" ads
Yahoo! Tech Advisors —
... As Engadget points out , AT has a "huge" 2G network that allows for both voice and data calls (albeit data at dial-up speeds), and indeed, Verizon already tweaked the original ad, ditching the "out of touch" remark and adding a "Voice and data services available outside of 3G areas" disclaimer after some nagging by AT But even with those changes, AT apparently thinks that those two mapsâthe big bright red one, and the blotchy blue oneâwill "mislead" viewers into thinking that AT phones are practically useless in the Midwest, and it wants a preliminary injunction against ...

AT&T might be suing Verizon for misrepresenting its network in ads, but that doesn't seem to have dissuaded Beg Red from using that same map image in this new spot, which casts the iPhone away to the Island of Misfit Toys. AT&T adds Verizon's Island of Misfit Toys holiday ads to lawsuit, demands they be yanked off the air
Engadget Mobile —
... Well, you knew this was coming -- AT&T's amended its advertising lawsuit against Verizon to include Big Red's new holiday ads, including that oh-so-cute Island of Misfit Toys spot, and demanded that they be taken off the air. At question is the same map of AT&T's 3G coverage used in the other commercial, which Ma Bell says misleads customers into thinking it has no service at all in large swaths of the country. Best part? AT&T's lawyers had to describe the ad in their new filing, leading to passages like this: ...
AT&T responds to Verizon's 3G ad campaign -- by bragging about EDGE
Engadget Mobile —
... -- not only is Ma Bell suing over 'em, it's now issuing PR to clarify what it sees as the inaccuracies of the entire campaign. If you'll recall, AT&T thinks Verizon's 1:1 comparison of 3G coverage maps makes it looks like AT&T doesn't have any coverage at all across most of the country -- which means that our nation's largest wireless carrier is now in the sad position of pimping its gigantic EDGE network in response. Let's all gloss over the absolutely huge difference in 3G versus EDGE together, shall we? ...

AT&T loses request for injunction against Verizon's Map for That ads
Engadget Mobile —
... Looks like AT&T's not getting its holiday wish after all -- a federal judge just ruled against Ma Bell's request to have Verizon's Map For That ads pulled off the air. That doesn't mean that this whole thing is over, though: the judge called the ads "sneaky" and said that it was possible people might misunderstand them because "most people who are watching TV are semi-catatonic." Whether or not that's enough to support a legal conclusion that the ads are misleading is a fight for another day -- specifically December 16th, when AT&T will have a second chance to ...
