Apple’s netbook/tablet to be based on ARM Cortex architecture?
MacDailyNews — ... chips use many times less power, enabling much longer battery life and much sleeker design. 5. You won't need to virtualize Windows on these types of devices. Most other Apple applications can be easily ported between chips. 6. Apple wants more control over the processors, which it can't have with Intel. 7. While a variant of the iPhone version of OSX is the most likely of candidates, Snow Leopard's optimization release might also be for ARM as well. Much more in the full article here .

Could apple be working on an ARM-powered netbook?
Liliputing — First of all, let’s make something clear. Apple has not said that it will make a netbook, and any mini-laptop the company does release will probably look very different from the Asus Eee PCs and MSI Winds of the world. Because Apple doesn’t do cheap. I think it’s more likely that Apple would release an oversized iPod for $599  than that the company will release a cheap and undersized MacBook for that price. Now, with that out of the way, Computer World has an interesting article discussing what type of CPU an Apple ...

Why Apple may chose the ARM processor for a netbook
The Apple Core — ... ComputerWorld’s Seth Weintraub wrote an excellent article about Apple’s choice of the ARM processor – which is used in the iPhone and iPod touch –and why it will most likely chose ARM for a netbook and/or tablet Mac. Despite the fact that Apple buys its desktop and notebook processors exclusively from Intel and its Atom processors are already in most shipping netbooks, Weintraub notes that the ARM Cortex A8 processor “absolutely kills the Intel Atom in power efficiency.” ARM and Intel are ...

Though Morris did not speak directly about Apple, he did provide details that could lead one to theorize that Apple will be using the ARM architecture for its much-rumored Mac netbook/tablet. An inset on a PowerPoint slide showing a very recognizable Mac notebook at the top of the list of the mobile device breakdown is the most ...

Analysis: ARM Chips Could Appear in Apple Netbooks, Tablets
Wired: Gadget Lab — ... Why? The successful iPhone is currently powered by an ARM chip, and these processors can now do anything an Intel chip can do (except run Windows), explains ComputerWorld's Seth Weintraub. Also, ARM chips are extremely inexpensive, with costs as low as $10 a piece. And finally, ARM is 10 to 20 times more power-efficient than Intel's low-powered Atom processor found in almost every netbook today. ...

Apple Netbook/Tablet May be Based on ARM Cortex Architecture
I4U News — ... than Intel parts, takes up less motherboard space, uses less power, and it won't need to run Windows. The operating system could be a variation on the iPhone OSX, though an optimized version of Snow Leopard might work. I think that an optimized version of Snow Leopard on a lower cost netbook in the $450 to $500 range would woo lots of notebook shoppers to try a Mac. That said the chances of anything Apple selling in the same price range as Window's based products are slim. Via Computerworld Posted on Tue, 9 Dec 2008 14:00:00 CST | by Shane McGlaun ...

Speculation Increases That ARM-Powered Apple Netbook is On the Way
Fast Company - Technology — ... data ready for the rumors. Jobs' careful stepping around the netbook issue is easy to understand: Apple's MacBook laptop range is increasingly successful, even if it carries the famous "Apple tax" expense. The iPhone is a unique device in the smartphone market, essentially acting as a very limited pocket PC. And a mid-range and, above all, cheap netbook would run the risk of cannibalizing sales of either machine. Perhaps that's why during his version of this rumor Seth Weintraub at ComputerWorld is speculating the device will be a tablet machine, versus the mini-notebook ...

One last thought on ARM...AppleTV
9 to 5 Mac - Apple Intelligence — I've become over-fascinated about ARM's roadmap since investigating a post I did for Computerworld over the weekend.  To me it makes just a little too much sense that these chips will rise up the ranks of Apple's products over the next few years.  For instance, take a look at TI's 600MHz OMAP ARM processor.  (see full size here)  This isn't a "roadmap" processor.  It currently sits in Archos PMPs and Open Pandora and does some amazing things at 600MHz.  What's coming out in 2009 will blow this away.  Expect 1.6 GHz ARM Cortex Processors that ...

MSI does cloning the right way, on the sly
9 to 5 Mac - Apple Intelligence — Look, we aren't taking sides on this one.  If Apple releases a netbook, we're all over it.  But, until then, running a purchased copy of OSX on one of these mini laptops is great fun and sport and seems pretty reasonable/legal.  At least as far as we can ascertain. What we do know, however, is that releasing OSX Wifi drivers for your products isn't illegal and, frankly it is mighty nice.  It also makes buying MSI hardware a good idea/advertising/PR for Hackintosh users which may or may not be a significant market.  Though, frankly, the $360 HP Mini 1000 kills the MSI Wind for Mac-like design ...

9 to 5 Mac - Apple Intelligence — ... TI OMAP ARM processors running at 600Mhz.  Notice how fast they browse websites (with Flash!)  Imagine these devices with further optimization and some additional speed, iPhone Mobile OS X, App Store, 720P HD resolution and half as thick due to using Flash instead of a hard drive and you'd have something special.  ...

9 to 5 Mac - Apple Intelligence — ... will be around.  So will new iPhone ARM Cortex A(8?) series hardware that will likely be able to handle the intensive CPU requirements that Flash takes to perform well.  Will Apple back port it to older hardware?  Perhaps but it is unclear how it will perform. ...

ARM demonstrates first 32nm, multicore chips for 2010. Netbooks?
9 to 5 Mac - Apple Intelligence — ... While everyone would like to see a multi-core iPhone this year, it doesn't appear likely. But that doesn't mean Apple doesn't have big ARM plans... ...

'Apple must do a NetBook, now!'
9 to 5 Mac - Apple Intelligence — ... That's not to say Apple won't release some insanely cool portable device in the near future.  In fact, we expect to see an Apple portable device based on an ARM Cortex processor by WWDC.  But this thing won't be a Netbook, at least in the traditional sense.  It will be different and of course be revolutionary.  It will be impossibly xxxx and amazingly xxxx. And you will want that too. ...

Apple Touch Netbooks Q3 2009?
9 to 5 Mac - Apple Intelligence — ... working with Apple to develop some new products, but it said it does not know what applications the new products are for. Wintek added that no shipment schedule has been worked out yet, but shipments are likely to begin in the second half of the year. Quanta Computer will be the maker of Apple's new netbook, the Commerical Times report said.   We've said in the past that we think that these products won't be based on Intel chips but rather on ARM Cortex-based processors. ...

Tablet announced tomorrow?
9 to 5 Mac - Apple Intelligence — ... It basically goes like this:  Apple has said it is increasing its embedded device list this year.  Ten-inch touch screens seem to be flying around Asia en route to Apple for late Summer.  If there is a tablet with resolution independence, developers are going to need a few months to tweak their apps for launch.  Also, ARM's new line of Cotex A8 architecture processors are tablet-worthy.  ...

Will the new iPhone have a better processor? (Yes)
9 to 5 Mac - Apple Intelligence — ... All of these ARM Cortex chips benefit from the work that ARM has been putting into making these products "netbook worthy".  They will all run Flash 10 out of the box as well as modern browsers like Firefox and Webkit-based Safari very quickly.  They also blow away Intel's Atom in terms of power usage.  A lot of these chips run in devices that  can measure their battery time in days, not hours. ...

Apple To Offer $899 Tablet With OLED Screen?
BARRONS.com: Tech Trader Daily — ... Electroinics, and an ARM Holding (ARMH) dual core Corex9 chipset. He writes that his contacts are “almost positive” that such a device is coming, that Apple wants to launch this year, but that widespread availability isn’t likely until Q1 2010. I’d note that there have been rumors about Apple sourcing OLED screens from LG for some months now; rumors that a tablet will be based on a Cortex chip have been around since late last year. And there have even been some stories asserting that ...

ARM announces 2GHz, low power chip - is this the heart of Apple's tablet?
9 to 5 Mac - Apple Intelligence — ... a single step, and it’s possible Apple’s tablet tale opened up yet another chapter on ARM’s morning announcement of its development of a new 2GHz, dual-core version of its Cortex-A9 architecture. This 40-nanometre processor offers its high speed at impressively low power, which ARM pegs at 0.25-Watts per CPU. The product’s being aimed at the market for fast small home devices.
