At least three of the four major network operators in the U.S. have announced sales on devices for the Black Friday shopping bonanza. Here's a round-up of what AT&T;, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless are offering. My favorite deal is the buy-one-get-one BlackBerry offer that Verizon has scheduled for Friday, November 27.

T-Mobile, HTC Add to Black Friday Shopping Deals

T-Mobile is knocking 50 bucks off of three popular phones, and HTC wants to send HTC holiday shoppers $100 in exchange for their old smartphones. According to one survey, roughly a fifth of electronics shoppers are planning to spend $1,000 on Black Friday. - HTC and T-Mobile are among the vendors offering discounts during the post-Thanksgiving weekend, which is all too well known for its bargains, dearth of parking spots and instances of otherwise sane people shopping at ungodly hours.

According to a Nov. 21 survey from Retrevo, an online electronics...

Google Maps Navigation Free GPS Comes to Android 1.6 Smartphones

Google Nov. 23 made its Google Maps Navigation feature for Google Maps available for smartphones running the Android 1.6 operating system build and higher. This means users of the T-Mobile myTouch 3G and inaugural but clunky G1 can enjoy turn-by-turn voice directions. This release includes Google's new Layers feature, which lets users overlay geographical information, such as transit lines, Wikipedia articles about places, and more on the map. However, users cannot use the navigate to voice command. -

The free Google Maps Navigation feature for Google Maps is
now available for smartphones running the Android 1.6 operating system build and
higher, the search engine said Nov. 23.

Top Wireless Turkeys Of 2009

Amid a year when the iPhone 3GS was released, Android exploded on the scene after simmering in the form of the T-Mobile G1 for nearly a year and Verizon launching some great ads talking smack about AT&T;'s performance, there have been a few wireless blunders that are best forgotten. 2009 isn't over yet, but there would need to be something pretty spectacular to top the turkeys on this list.

AT T introduced the BlackBerry Curve 8520, while T-Mobile launched the BlackBerry Bold 9700. Nearly identical at a glance, the smartphones differ in price, as well as features such as GPS, WiFi calling and camera resolution. -

T-Mobile Resumes Sidekick Sales Despite Costly Risk

Observers say T-Mobile's resumption of sales of the Sidekick -- which had been sidelined since last month's massive loss of customer data -- is a good start. But, they say, the incident has proven costly and points to a risky tactic that the carrier's competitors have stopped using.

The failure hit at a bad time for T-Mobile. "This was a fairly high-profile black eye for T-Mobile at a particularly challenging time for them," said Al Hilwa, director of application development for IDC. "It is not the kind of publicity anyone wants. ... In the whole scheme of things, the company didn't lose a lot of data. But it's clear that people get upset. People have zero tolerance for this."

The problem was traced to servers run by Microsoft subsidiary Danger, which operates the cloud-based service for T-Mobile. T-Mobile declined to comment on what steps were taken to prevent a recurrence. Microsoft didn't provide information after a phone inquiry to its PR firm.
