Android 1.6 Phones Get Google Maps Directions

Google has expanded the availability of its free Google Maps Navigation service, which previously ran only on handsets equipped with the company's Android 2.0 operating system. Now handsets running Android 1.6 and higher -- such as the T-Mobile myTouch 3G and the G1 -- have access to the beta software, according to navigation manager Michael Siliski.

"If you have a phone running Android 1.6, you can download an updated version of Google Maps from Android Market," Siliski said. "So if you're traveling this Thanksgiving, you'll be able to enjoy the benefits."

The Internet Advantage

Google Maps Navigation is an Internet-connected GPS system featuring 3-D map views, turn-by-turn voice guidance, and automatic rerouting capabilities similar to personal navigation devices. "But unlike most navigation systems, Google Maps Navigation was built from the ground up to take advantage of your phone's Internet connection," said software engineer Keith Ito.

Developers Look Past Jammed iPhone App Store

Programmers at Ubermind are diversifying their app store loyalties. Once the company's mobile-phone software developers trained all their attention on making applications for the Apple iPhone. No longer.

The 34-person team at Ubermind, maker of the popular iLightr app that creates a virtual flame on the iPhone screen, recently began building apps for a rival mobile-phone operating system. They're now releasing two apps a month for devices based on Android, the software backed by Google, in addition to the five monthly apps they release for the iPhone. "We have no plans to abandon" the iPhone, says Ubermind CEO Shehryar Khan, who says his company's sales have doubled in the past year thanks to iPhone apps. "But we are not going to put all our eggs in one basket."

Of the more than 125,000 programmers registered to create apps for the iPhone, a growing number are branching out to build apps for Android and other operating systems. The Apple App Store is still growing, with an inventory that recently ...

Find more top technology news, videos, and blogs on TechBlips: Mobile, Android, Apple

Google Maps Navigation Free GPS Comes to Android 1.6 Smartphones

Google Nov. 23 made its Google Maps Navigation feature for Google Maps available for smartphones running the Android 1.6 operating system build and higher. This means users of the T-Mobile myTouch 3G and inaugural but clunky G1 can enjoy turn-by-turn voice directions. This release includes Google's new Layers feature, which lets users overlay geographical information, such as transit lines, Wikipedia articles about places, and more on the map. However, users cannot use the navigate to voice command. -

The free Google Maps Navigation feature for Google Maps is
now available for smartphones running the Android 1.6 operating system build and

Android, RIM Devices Grow, But Apple Tops Wireless Use

Things are changing in the world of smartphones, according to the October Mobile Metrics Report from AdMob. The organization, which is in the process of being acquired by Google, traced the operating systems and handsets running on devices served by its network, said Nicole Leverich, the company's director of corporate communications.

The AdMob network, she said, serves ads and applications for more than 15,000 web sites around the world.

RIM Stays Steady

Among BlackBerrys, the firm found that the lion's share of Research in Motion's traffic is still generated by older BlackBerry Curve 8300 and Pearl 8100 series. Newer devices, such as the BlackBerry Tour and updated versions of the Curve 8900 and 8520, are increasing usage on the network.

The BlackBerry Storm generated 12 percent of requests, a constant measure during the past year. Newer BlackBerry devices like the 8220 and 8230 Flip -- RIM assigns numbers to devices based on the carrier, Leverich said -- constituted less than two percent ...

Find more top technology news, videos, and blogs on TechBlips: Mobile, Android, Apple, BlackBerry

Why The Google Phone Could Dampen Android Phone Sales

Consumers interested in buying phones based on the Android open source operating system may feel some hesitation with the emerging rumors of a Google phone. Such a phone would likely provide a more fully integrated user experience, similar to Apple's iPhone. Ultimately, this could hurt sales of the Motorola Droid, HTC Eris and other Android devices based on hardware from manufacturers and software from Google and application developers. EWEEK looks at the buyer's dilemma here. -

News Analysis: Many of you by now have read about the rumored Google phone, that Google Android operating system-based and
Google-branded smartphone to beat other Android smartphones, and maybe even
Apple's iPhone.
TechCrunch and other blogs are seemingly trying to will

Apple Defends App Store Rules as Developers Defect

While Apple's App Store has been king of its particular hill, there are indications that at least some developers are getting annoyed at its policies -- and are increasingly developing for other platforms, such as Google's Android. Now Apple is beginning to push back.

In an interview Sunday with Business Week, Phil Schiller, Apple's senior vice president for worldwide marketing, defended the company's policy of selecting which applications it allows in the online store.

A Store 'People Trust'

The intention, Schiller said, has been to build "a store for the most part that people trust." This has meant being highly selective about what applications are accepted. The App Store now has more than 100,000 apps, more than any other app store for mobile devices, but it's also dealing with about 10,000 new submissions every week.

Schiller said the store's role is to decide which products end up on its shelves, much as any quality retailer would.

Apple has said app rejections that have gained ...

Find more top technology news, videos, and blogs on TechBlips: Mobile, Apple, Google, Android

That isn't going to stop people from trying though. If even only half as successful, there is a lot of money to be made. The latest platform to catch fire is Android.

Based on the spec sheet that's floating about the Interwebs today, it appears as though Motorola's next Android phone is probably headed to AT&T; -- which remains to be the only major U.S. carrier not already offering an Android handset.

Apple and Google Android seem to have the market sown up With the arrival of the Motorola Droid and the Apple App Store milestone of surpassing 100,000 apps, the buzz around mobile apps has never been louder.
Top Wireless Turkeys Of 2009

Amid a year when the iPhone 3GS was released, Android exploded on the scene after simmering in the form of the T-Mobile G1 for nearly a year and Verizon launching some great ads talking smack about AT&T;'s performance, there have been a few wireless blunders that are best forgotten. 2009 isn't over yet, but there would need to be something pretty spectacular to top the turkeys on this list.

Google Chrome OS Unveiled: Nothing But The Web

Today Google aired a webcast where they whipped the curtains all the way off Google Chrome OS for the first time. It's about what most people expected: Chrome OS running on top of a thin layer of Linux, designed for netbooks -- and designed for people whose sole computing experience is the web. It's Google's netbook answer to Android.

Palm Works To Regain a Place in Smartphones

In a land of cell phone giants, Palm is a mouse.

Palm is tiny compared with Apple, Research in Motion, Samsung, Google, Microsoft and Nokia, which are battling to control the future of smartphones.

Palm invented the category of a Web-surfing pocket-computer phone with its Treo line in 2002. But more recently, it lost its way in the market as some of its rivals developed more innovative phones. Its new management team, heavily laden with talent from Apple, introduced a new generation of smartphones in June with the Palm Pre on Sprint's network in the United States. The second phone in the line, the Pixi, went on sale in the United States on Sunday.

Both phones received good reviews for being easy to use and great for Web browsing. But in recent weeks, Google's Android operating system for smartphones has grabbed the attention of the American public, as Verizon in the United States heavily promotes the Motorola Droid phone.

While no one expected Palm's sales would rival the sales of iPhones or ...

Find more top technology news, videos, and blogs on TechBlips: Mobile, Apple, Google, Android

News Analysis: The iPhone might be the leader in the mobile-phone market, but that success won't be able to stop Android's rise. Google's platform is simply too compelling and too appealing to consumers not to capture significant market share. -

With the launch of Motorola's Droid, Google's Android platform is officially on
the mobile-platform map. It has been around for a while, of course, but until
now, most people shopping for
smartphones had little knowledge about its existence or
the value it provides. It was, for the m...

Linux's Future: Google?

Laugh (or cry) if you want. But with each successive release of Android, and with each new iteration of Chrome -- soon to be ChromeOS -- it's looking more and more like Linux's future as any kind of mainstream product is in Google's hands. There's a lesson here.

Droid via Verizon Gives iPhone Run for the Money

In the 2 1/2 years since the iPhone's release, no other cell phone has come close to getting the same amount of hype -- until now.

Enter Motorola's Droid, a Verizon offering that represents the best refinement of Google's Android mobile operating system to date. It doesn't take long for it to prove that it's better than nearly every other half-baked touchscreen phone out there.

But how does it stack up against the granddaddy of them all?

Let's start with the basics. Droid comes with a 16GB memory card and sells for $199, though that's after a $100 mail-in rebate. Apple's 16GB model costs the same, though you don't have to mess with the mail. Both require $30 per month data plans on top of the usual phone plan.

The Droid's vivid screen is slightly taller than the iPhone's, and the phone itself is a little bit thicker to accommodate the slide-out keyboard. Yes, you can use the physical keyboard at any time if you don't like the touch keyboard, though the physical keyboard's buttons are slick and ...

Find more top technology news, videos, and blogs on TechBlips: Mobile, Verizon, Apple, Android, Google

The Motorola Droid Vs. The HTC Eris

Instead of the Droid vs. iPhone grudge match retold, I'm putting the Droid and Eris in the steel cage. My ground rule for testing and comparing the phones was that I wanted to turn them on and begin using them without looking at the tip guides. Call it an intuitiveness test. The Eris runs Android 1.5, the Droid Android 2.0. The Android OS was a breeze to navigate on both smartphones, allowing me to flit from one application, or phone feature to the next with virtually none of what I call get-up-to-speed time learning how to use the devices. And the winner is... -

News Analysis: When I first learned of the Motorola Droid from Verizon Wireless, I was ecstatic for two reasons.
First, I
wanted an Android phone. Second, I wanted it on the Verizon network. The Droid
offered both, so I was keen to check it out in stores and put it on my
Christmas...

While Apple, Google, Microsoft, RIM and others are growing their application stores, a new report from researcher Strand Consult suggests that, for the mobile industry, the future of value-added services isnt in app stores. - Apples App Store now offers more than 100,000 apps, and has facilitated approximately 2.2 billion downloads. Googles Android Market is next in line, with an impressive 10,000-plus app offerings.
