An ombudsman with the European Union said the European Commission erred in its investigation of Intel when it failed to take minutes of a 2006 meeting with a Dell executive. The EC in May fined Intel $1.45 billion for anticompetitive practices, but Intel is appealing the ruling. Intel executives have criticized the EC for conducting a biased investigation. - An ombudsman with the European Union criticized its antitrust regulatory agency for not properly recording a meeting during its investigation of Intel.
In a ruling Nov. 18, ombudsman Nikiforos Diamandouros accused the European Commission of “maladministratrion” for failing to take minutes during a ...

Intel Makes Leap in Device to Aid Impaired Readers

Despite all of the advances in digital technology, too few high-tech products have emerged to help the blind read books or other paper documents, or to make reading such texts easier for people with impaired vision or language-related learning disabilities.
A few years back, a breakthrough was made with text-to-speech software that could be installed on a specific mobile phone, but with limitations due to the phone’s small screen and buttons, and restricted processor power.

The Intel Reader
Now, Intel, the giant chip maker, is attacking this problem with a new product: the Intel Reader. It’s a chunky, book-size device with a computer-grade processor and a large, forward-facing screen that can be viewed easily while its downward-facing camera is shooting text for translation into audio and giant text. It also has raised buttons that are easy to find via touch.
I’ve been testing the Intel Reader with books, newspapers, magazines, bank statements, menus and even cereal ...

Find more top technology news, videos, and blogs on TechBlips: Hardware, Intel

White paper: Reducing Data Center Cost with an Air Economizer

To challenge established industry assumptions regarding data center cooling, Intel IT conducted a proof of concept (PoC) test that used an air economizer to cool production servers with 100 percent outside air at temperatures of up to 90 degrees Fahrenheit (F). With this approach, we could use an economizer to provide nearly all data center cooling, substantially reducing power consumption. This could potentially reduce annual operating costs by up to USD 2.87 million for a 10-megawatt (MW) data center.

Find more top technology news, videos, and blogs on TechBlips: Hardware, Intel

White paper: System Management Mode Rootkits

For the past several years, rootkit detection and defense has been an ongoing, complex game of hide and seek between rootkit and security software developers. The emergence of hardware virtualization technology dramatically changed the game and marked a critical divergence in rootkit evolution. Virtualized rootkits, however, were limited to newer Intel or AMD processors supporting hardware virtualization extensions. System Management Mode (SMM), a relatively obscure mode on Intel processors used for low level hardware management, provides a similarly stealthy, OS independent environment for rootkits that is viable on the older non-virtualized subset of existing hardware.

Find more top technology news, videos, and blogs on TechBlips: Hardware, Intel, AMD

Nokia Booklet 3G Netbook

Nokia spokespeople are quick to correct you if you slip and call the Booklet 3G a netbook. Well, let's see: It has a tiny, clamshell, laptop-like design. It has meager specs (1GB of RAM, Intel's Z530 1.6-GHz Atom CPU, and a 4200-rpm 120GB hard drive). It has a 10.1-inch screen. Last time I checked, that was pretty much the definition of a netbook. The Booklet 3G just happens to be a reasonably well-constructed model with a focus on being 3G wireless-ready. But are you willing to shell out $599, sans contract (price as of 11/13/09), for Nokia's maiden effort in the netbook market (or $299 subsidized through an AT&T; data plan)?

Find more top technology news, videos, and blogs on TechBlips: Mobile, Nokia, Intel, AT&T
